I have been getting a few of those emails from Strava...Uh oh! Blah Blah has stolen your KOM. Now I know it's all just a bit of fun but these are all KOMs that I never reallized I had! Then when I look at the activity that I was supposed to have KOMed on there is no mention of the KOM segement in the ride 'report'. So can KOMs be retrospectively awarded if someone creates a segment after you have ridden it? I didn't think they could.

Yup. you can click 'Refresh my Acheivements' on the old activity, but there are caveats best explained on the Strava site

But for example, if you KOM'd a segment that didn't exist, then that would show, but if you had a top '3' in another, but lost it since, that would be lost in the refresh. I'm not sure if it screws up PRs or not.
I quite like it when you get "So and so has taken the KOM you never knew you had" then when you look, they haven't, they have now cropped the car part of their ride out or something, and you have a new KOM you never knew about.
The scantily clad women have only given me one kudos, maybe it's cos I didn't click on the link to **** them.

One thing - when you look at their profiles (which I did because I have had kudos from attractive ladies who I do know but don't immediately recognise), they have 0 activities but have all run a very long distance in a very short time. What's that all about?
private activities? probably manual uploaded fake/nicked gpx files?
only randoms i've had adding me appeared to be semi-professional / wannabe sports people trying to boost their online profile through some kind of SEO hack via strava

But I thought that is why a lot of people make new segments on popular trails because they had lost their KOM on an existing one.

Or sometimes, I've tried to create a segment for a parralel path, but it picks up the main path anyway and there's no option for how close the trace has to be 🙁 (of course it could be that people are trying to get the start/end points that favour them, I've done this on one segment where some forestry work affects how I come into it, and I might stop at the top to clean glasses etc., so sometimes I get a stationary bit at the top, but I kept my segment private for my own benefit - I'm not going to try and get the KOM on it and moving the start and finish wouldn't achieve that for me on that segment anyway!
I rode with a buddy who took a KOM on a new trail the other day, the crown icon showed in the summary but when you clicked the ride it didn't show in the summary of segments the phone app shows!
Maybe this happened for you several times OP?
Oikeith that tens to happen if you already had the Kom from a previous activity and you have improved your time on that segment. It shows as a PR on the segment list but a crown on the overview.

I had the lovely Larissa Kudos my ride to the shops yesterday. Bizarrely it has disappeared today. Shame, as I was hoping she could help with my training, 😉 as she'd only done 1 ride this year but managed to complete 47km in 49 mins!
