I've been an avid SportsTracks user, and as a result very familiar with the interface, interrogation of data and analysis.  Long story short, I've just switched to a Garmin Wearable (Fenix) and set up Garmin Connect and linked this to a free version of Strava.  I quite like the way I have one wearable device, that records all things I do and the auto upload - ace!

My question is about monitoring kit usage and maintenance as can do this easily on SportTracks.  However I can't quite work out this functionality in either Garmin Connect or Strava.  For example in ST I can monitor more than one bike build, the chain wear, fork servicing, upgrades and bike part additions and so on.  Whilst I can see that I can log an activity against which bike (or shoes) in Strava or Garmin Connect there is no where near the granularity offered by ST.

Can either Strava or Garmin Connect do what I am seeking?

Not as far as I'm aware with the free version. Don't know about the premium version.

Strava premium you can log multiple bikes and every component on them. Not sure about the free version.

There is a "gear" section in garmin connect, but I never use it, I did set up a couple of pairs of running shoes to monitor wear, but I never remember to assign a run to the pair of shoes I wore, so it was quite pointless.

You can monitor as many bikes as you like right down to individual components in Strava (free version). Just remember to set the bike you used at the end of each ride.
it's in settings under gear. - might need to use a laptop. I don't ever use Strava app.
The date you add the bike all components default to, if you change/replace something it'll show as mileage from the date you entered the new part being fitted.
it's very handy for checking wear rates of drivetrain, tyres and brakes
Having shitloads of bikes I store shock settings and tyre pressure in there too. (in the additional notes bit).

it's pretty much all I use Strava for these days. Stopped following or accepting followers years ago.

@geex - Is  that new? Certainly didn't notice it when I added my last bike earlier this year. Actually a bit of messing around in the interface shows that it doesn't appear in the "Add a bike" dialog but if you edit the bike's details which I don't think I've ever done.

Wow, had no idea you could do that. But then I can't seem to make Strava record for the right bike and it defaults to my least-used one, so that's less helpful.

@thenorthwind - you can set your default bike by going to "My Gear" in Settings and selecting the appropriate bike. If/when you ride a different bike you get the option to change it when uploading the activity.

I assume the auto-connect from Garmin to upload to Strava would default to last used?  Is it easy to edit an activity in Strava once complete?

Good tip on the laptop, I've been accessing via apps,, which may account for some of me going round the houses with it all

any upload defaults to whatever bike you have set to default in the settings > gear. bikes  list

you can change it afterwards within the edit ride function

I tend to leave the default to my most used bike and change it later

Strava defaults to the default bike. It's very easy to edit.

@whitestone that ability has been there for ages. What you can't finish move a component from one bike to the other though (I just make a note against the new bike)

No. You can set the default bike in the Strava settings.

Yep. You can do some on the App (like rename, add photos) and more in a web browser

Don't forget your privacy zone around your house etc. And don't go calling Bike 1 the "SWorks Stumpy", Bike 2 "bling machine" - just use something simple that doesn't identify the bike.

@whitestone Cheers for that. Seems a bit perverse not to allow you to do it at the start/end/middle of recording - I'll definitely forget to change it later more often than not.
