went out for a ride yesterday, which i know is roughly 15 miles in total.
by halfway point coffee stop, my strava on my phone says 14 mile, with a top speed of 56mph.
so i stop strava. save it, and restart on way back. same again, logs route at over 10 miles when i know it is 7. top speed of 70mph.
just been for a ride today, 13 mile logged at coffee stop, i know it is 8. so i delete strava off my phone.
i then turn my OS maps thing on, and use that to log 2nd half of ride. again shows 15 mile when i know it is 7.
apart from the obvious of never using strava/os/any other bollox apps, anyone have any idea of what the problem may be ?
sure it's not reporting km instead of miles? as 8 miles is approx 13km!
other than that would be interesting to see the map of what it has recorded, GPS in phone could be playing up I guess?
it is miles.
It sounds like your route passes through a number of rifts in the space-time continuum. Now you just need to figure out a way to monetise that.

Looks like it's simply not tracking accurately. Interference with GPS signal could be caused by another device nearby, by having the phone somewhere with a poor view of the sky, with a faulty GPS aerial (have you dropped the phone recently?)
phone is in my jacket chest pocket, like always.
only change is, i have some new £20 notes in my phone case.
causing some kind of interference maybe ??
Could be? A chest pocket isn't the ideal place (your body will be blocking some of the satellites) but if it has been working before then it seems sensible to look for other changes. If it had been one ride then it's possible that one of the GPS satellites was playing up but I doubt that would cause a problem over a couple of days. I'd power off/on your phone before your next ride too, just in case it's a problem with one of the apps.
One possibility is that there is an os software problem that is screwing things up. I’ve had this happen once or twice in the past with particular os versions (iPhone) that have affected the accuracy of the gps. It’s always been resolved by a phone reboot.
I would be unsurprised to find out it was the OS app. Seems flaky at the best of times.
No dodgy metal bits in your ticker is there Tony from your heart issues
If your phone goes into battery saving mode,it switches the GPS chip off to save battery life which means it's less accurate. Different phones and different apps handle this in different ways but I'd
1. Check the battery settings on the phone
2. Make sure the phone is fully charged (or decent amount of battery life left)
3. Check the location settings for the phone or app. I'm not a iphone user so no idea how to do it on Apple but it's possible to have different settings on Android phones. Make sure location is set to high accuracy (or similar)
And what scotroutes said - a chest pocket doesn't offer the best view of the sky. Usually GPS antenna is at the top of the phone so at least try to make sure it's upright rather than upside down...
right then, feel free to tell me i am talking bollox, but i switched my phone off and back on this morning. i then removed the £20 notes from my phone case and hey presto, all back to normal.
i blame the metallic strips in the twenties......... ;o)
