what's the best Strava alternative now the greedy b*****ds have downgraded the free version to the point where I might as well use Google maps.

I dont resent them for doing it, I resent them for trying to charge money for a product which consistently doesn't work properly.

Does anyone have use a similar app which works properly and has enough of a user base to make the leader boards useful?

FTFY what’s the best Strava alternative now the greedy b*****ds have downgraded the free version have said that yes, its a great app that everyone uses, but they're quite a small company and really do need to try and become profitable to, you know, like, survive...

Its not about survival, its about boosting the financial results for a sale. Don't be so naive.

Looking down my rides over the past year, theyre full of false positions, weird spikes into the middle of nowhere etc. If you live on your bike then its worth it, its not if you ride once or twice a month around other commitments

We're going into a global recession. Values of startups (i.e. companies that aren't profitable but people expect to be in the future) have dropped massively e.g. Monzo, a very promising challenger bank down by 40%.

Next funding round there won't be a lot of people putting money into the likes of Strava if they're still not profitable.

Like Singletrack, I'll pay for it now because I use it and still have a job.

More likely to be the product of whatever device you're using to record. I get that when my phone GPS is on the fritz or I've buried it in my pack and it isn't picking up position reliably.

While I'm sure Strava won't go completely toes up, is there an app which can grab my several years' worth of ride data as a backup?

I thought that, but it happens pretty frequently and Its happened across 3 phones, always kept in the very top pocket of my pack. I would edit them out, but the app functionality doesn't allow it i don't think.

100% glitch free functionality for me using either a Garmin Edge 25 or an android phone stuffed in back pocket.

I don't resent them doing it in the slightest, Strava has always been a useful bit of additional fun to wile away the hours when I'm not actually riding, easily worth £48 a year.

I hear google maps is still free but good luck plotting any route of even mild complexity now, it's pish.

£1 a week. That'll tip most people into the financial void. Only the rich will survive.

Strava is a pretty solid app. I would look closer to home for the issue first OP.

Seems pretty reliable to me. I don't get any glitches using a Wahoo. I see the odd anomaly on other uploads but I suspect the majority are power saving mode issues stopping the device GPS.

6.99 is too much money for something I use once or twice a month. Simple as that. I dont need the route planning element, just the segment timing so I can see if I'm getting fitter, if I'm as fit as before an injury etc. Is there an alternative out there? Ad boosted is fine, thats how the rest of the Internet makes its money

And also is there an app that only lets other people join that are slower than me so I'm always top?

Not really a Strava issue that one. See also tyre sizes, geometry, pretty much any bike, kit or component upgrade.

Look, I've just bough a new set of £1000 carbon wheels to make me faster, I can't afford £4 a month on Strava to see if they actually work.

/nottrue

Will probably pay. Was thinking about Veloviewer at the same time.

The only bit I couldn't live without is the route planning. It's just so much better than komoot (also costs a ****ing ton) and ridewithgps. The 'automatically route on the roads that cyclists use most' feature means you can get to a new place, slap a few segments into strava, and go for a ride that most people take months to find without a local.

I even used the new route finder app in my phone a few days ago and found two bits of singletrack near me I never knew actually existed.

What are the best free alternatives?

I haven't yet figured out what I get for my £48. But someone has to pay for it.

EDIT: it looks like they want to remain profitable *without* selling my personal information (the "fat old slow guys" market segment).

https://www.strava.com/subscription/from-our-founders?utm_source=strava&utm_medium=dorado&utm_campaign=founders_letter

So I'm cautiously thinking I might give it a go.

Greedy bastard who wants something for free doesn't see the irony of calling others greedy bastards.

Its not about survival, its about boosting the financial results for a sale.

For VC funded startups, these are the same thing 🙂

From the web page, go into your profile, then "Delete your account" - but fear not, you don't need to actually delete it 🙂 There's a button there to download your data.

I thought your relative efforts on segments remained? I thought you lost comparison with others

I thought it was £4 a month?

Genuine question can you really get fitter riding twice a month?

Me or Strava? 😀

It is, however, true. Strava neatly hides it there no doubt on purpose. I got the tip from the DC Rainmaker comments section as I certainly wouldn't have thought of looking there! (It was with some trepidation I checked it this morning before posting to this thread, but I assumed that even if it was the delete your user page there would at least be a yes/no confirmation popup before Strava actually did the deed!)

If you are only cycling once or twice a month I wouldn't worry about checking if you are getting fitter, you won't be. So just don't bother recording the ride with any app if that is the purpose.

So before Strava got real traction I was using Endomondo - just checked and the website is still there. I've not yet decided if I'll pay for strava or not but I'm wondering if you can do the bulk download of data and then bulk upload (several years worth0 of rides into endomondo as a backup or alternative....

Pretty sure you can upload to endomondo. Sure I've done it at some point.

You'll be able to see your own segment results, 2nd best time, pb etc. So the free version should be fine for you.

And as above, the GPS spikes etc isn't strava, it's your phones GPS. Strava can only use the GPS data it's provided, if that data is dodgy it's not stravas fault.

I switched from recording on a phone to a proper GPS device ages ago due to the inaccuracy, random GPS crashes etc.

Does anyone know when the Strava changes will kick in?

I can still create routes and see friends on the leader boards etc.

greedy b*****ds

I must say I'm totally with the op on this one. I think it's bang out of order that a company who has designed and built a really useful app that I've used continuously for the past 5 years for free, now expects to charge me for using their product. I mean how dare they...

In all seriousness, I kinda always did wonder why they didn't charge give there were no ads to pay for it. How did they ever make money beforehand?

This is annoying.
I really don't care about segments and leaderboards, but what I do use all the time is the route planner - it just works much better than alternatives I've found. I'm not going to pay for it though.
What do you guys use for route planning options? I use it for both on and off road.
