Once was enough. I got a dry 24 hours but preceded by weeks of rain. Slop fest. Wish I had taken a disposable bike such was the wear. I don't think that I would like to do it in the ice/snow. It would be a more enjoyable summer event when there is plenty of light and dry trails, but that would totally miss the spirit of the event. There does not seem to be the same appetite for the event as entries are still available. It used to sell out within the hour almost, or maybe they have increased the number of entries available.

Ive entered every one since 2007 as either a pair, solo or quad.

Not entered this year, not because of the cost, but this years one destroyed my bike, and it was only 8 weeks old, also, there are always the flood of entries available in Nov/Dec/Jan nearer the time with people selling them - so see how i feel about it then. Take a spare solo, or put myself up for anyone who needs a rider (preferably a pair).

The solos entries spaces are still available, even this morning. Normally would sell out in minutes. Theres 113 solos entries at mo.

It's something i always fancied trying but logistics and expense always got in the way. I don't think i'd have the brain power now to last the distance so it's kinda off the cards.

I think it used to be 50 solo places, so this is an improvement.

Ideally it would be solo only then there wouldn't be loads of demoralising fresh team riders overtaking us at warp speed at stupid o'clock 🙂

You always knew who they were, not only overtaking you at speed. They were also clean 😀

I do miss the 'old days' with the view rock descent. That was something to look forward to at the end of the lap, instead of that sloppy slogfest to the finish line....

Although if its a hard frozen icy one next year, with the compacted snow smoothing out the bumps, i'll probably regret not entering.

@lotto they used to have a 12 hour event in the summer quite a few years ago, but it wasnt that popular (i never entered). Not sure why. maybe the midges....

Its the best in the ice & snow!

We have entered, first time doing anything like this. Pairs.

Plenty of time to sort a suitable bike but is it mostly drivetrain and brake pads that take a hammering or more?

During the race - defo brakepads. Also keep the drivetrain clean and well lubed as best you can.

After this years puffer (for me and my 8 week old bike :D) - My BB needed replaced, my gear cable needed replaced, Headset and Wheel bearings needed re-greased (grinding). Replaced the chain as a matter of course. This if its wet and sloppy. I was solo. and did 13 laps in 18hrs

If its icy/hard packed snow. Then it limits the grinding paste mud getting into all your expensive bits and a much more pleasurable ride.

Remember take ice tyres - just in case.

Me too. Really want to do it, but the drive puts me off.

Wonder if there's any interest in splitting motorhome hire between a group and going?

( solo natch. Not interested in some half arsed pairs/ group nonsense)

my gear cable needed replaced,

I always figured it was a single speed event they forgot to restrict?

@rockthreegozy sounds obvious but plenty of torch batteries or a means to recharge is essential.

I was expecting over 2 hours from my head torch at max burn. Reality was more like 1.5 hrs. Meant frequent changing out. Not particularly cold. It was kinda misty during the night so needed full burn. If you get it cold and icey it may be clearer so require a less intense setting, but then I should imagine the cold will play a part in reducing burn expectancy.

Entered pre Covid for a one off, tick it off the list scenario. 2024 will be the third time now. Just a really sociable weekend, with good beer and pizza. Team of 4 again 👍

Did it 5yrs on the trot then did it as a mechanic too for a solo rider.

The riding is the easy bit.

The logistics are the hard part.
