hey all,
I am doing Enduro2 later in the month and they suggest we bring a jacket with us. I will be using my small Evoc bum bag, but dont think i will be able to squeeze my Leatt lightweight jacket in it (well not without some faff), so thought about a frame strap to carry it.
I dont have much experience with frame straps. There seem to be some that are just a strap, some that have what look like elasticated wings or ears on them. And then some that have a small pouch integrated.
Which is the best option for simple jacket carrying? Jacket will be 'balled' up. Not fussed about it getting wet or dirty, as if thats the conditions, i will be wearing it. I just dont want it slipping loose or falling out mid stage.
Any recommendations or advice is greatly received!
Voile straps are what I use. Come in all sorts of lengths
I, and other family members, found that merely strapping things on led to all sorts of extra wear and tear through mud and grit, and liable to lose something right at an inopportune moment. We bought small frame bags instead and much prefer them.
Bungee cord if it can't be worn or wrapped around you or backpack.

This. If you want to wear through the lightweight fabric in a couple of hours then find any strap and attach to any tube of your bike.
plus the jacket ends up getting soiled before you put it on...
you can get jackets nowadays which pack small and have their own strap, or, could pack into frame storage if you have it...
On my drop bar bikes my lightweight jacket lives in a frame bag.
If im out on my mtb and i need to take my jacket off, i tend to tie it over my bars...it's not ideal
hmmmm, ok, sounds like the option of strapping it to the frame is a bad one! Some sort of plan B required!
Strap it to the front of your bars and put it in a stuff sack. I do this *all* the time. I just use two small loops of thin elastic bungee which I keep wrapped around my exposure light mount when I'm not using it.
Never had any problems at all. Its a lot more out of the way and cleaner up there.
Only suitable for smallish/lightish jackets but works *really* well as far as I'm concerned.
Can carry enough gear for a *massive* mountain day with just a bumbag, that jacket setup, and maybe a water filter
I bought a strap in Alpkit for exactly this. But tbh, I haven’t used it yet. As far as I can see (from footering about with the strap and a jacket) you would need two straps to attach it securely - to prevent the jacket unravelling or flapping about. The Alpkit strap seems to be very similar to many of the others around:

I agree that, if it’s at all wet, your jacket will get dirty. But for a one-off event, I don’t see this as a huge problem. For every day use, im not so sure. The other option is to try to secure the jacket to the outside of your hip pack. Or if your hip pack has bottle holders, could you squish the jacket into one of those?
Coat strapped to bars yesterday using the toggles above.
I have a pair of toggles in every jacket now. Game changer!
In the magazine (yes, there's.....) a few issues ago there was a review on the evoc pro 3. Hannah mentioned it had elasticated loops on the top for carrying an extra layer. I thought that was a braw idea and wondered if I could do similar with my bum bag. It had spaces for water bottles each side so I used these spaces to put an extra loop in....
Am now able to roll my jacket up into it and tighten up the loops
Am hoping that this should work, am going to try it out in anger this weekend, might try the above advise of sticking it in a bag as well,

GO sell reasonably priced small immersion sacks. I carry mine in one (it's an old issue one, still does the job). That'll help keep that crap off it.
Altura Anywhere 1L Drybag + Vortex Grip Straps
The bag is a long tube shape, more suited for strapping places than any old dry bag.
@Matt_ss_xc yes that's exactly what I do. Only difference is I made my own elastic loops rather than buying bobbles ones.
It's great.
Much better to get the jacket on the bike on the bars and off your bumbag where it will feel heavier, flap about, and also get muddier.
I have a granite rockband frame strap, from here as a member gift with stw branding. It's good, with a wide velcro fixing. It holds a spare 29er tube firmly so if your jacket is a lightweight one that can fold to a similar size then it would be ideal.
Like this but stw branded:
