Hello there.
We have a family holiday booked near Stranraer at the end of May for a week. Staying in Kirkcolm. I will be taking my 29er Hardtail and after suggestions for places to ride. I’ll have 2-3 hrs to ride likely at dawn or in the evening after 7, maybe about 3 or 4 times. I’d be after cycle paths or fireroads or quiet rural roads or made up tracks, but don’t mind a bit of tech if at all possible, or forest. Just looking to explore the place really, see the sights and the explore the coast so any summits to suggest with good descents would be welcome and if there is any coastal cycle paths worth considering, if there is any. Think more traditional XC.
Also, any suggestions where to entertain a 3 and 8 yar old? Thanks
Getting the obvious suggestions out of the way, but both Glentrool & Kirroughtree are within an hour's striking distance of Stranraer.
Failing and/or on top of those, there's the walk(s) to and around the lighthouse at Mull of Galloway - which might well be really nice on a bike
also the lighthouse occasionally allow the public to the top and the RSPB place next door is pretty good.
Kayaking, rowing, boarding on Loch Ryan is good
Glentrool big country route is pretty good for a few hours and it links with the top of the Kirroughtree black route.
If you like gin there's the Crafty Distillery tour here in Newton Stewart.
Go for a walk up Cairnsmore of Fleet.
Mossyard beach is awesome
The zip wire at Laggan OUtdoor is a kilometre long and the cafe is lovely
Logan Botanical gardens are nice if that's your thing. Lots of activities for kids there as well during school hols.
Portpatrick is a nice spot to visit, nice cafes, beach, chippy...
I might think of some other stuff yet
Lots of quiet rural roads but I don't know any offroad in the area.
You could ride over quiet roads towards Killantringan beach - a good one for the family - and try looping back on the Southern Upland Way.
The SUW goes down towards the beach then along the coast to Portpatrick, and it's a good walk. The Crown has real ale. Port Pantry is good for lunch.
Cream o' Galloway make ice-cream from their dairy herd at Rainton, just after Gatehouse of Fleet, and have a park with treetop views and a flying fox. Good day out for the family.
Wigtown is worth a visit - book town with lots of secondhand books, cafes. Bladnoch distillery is nearby and used to do tours.
