Hey guys,
just been out in the back garden swapping bottom brackets as I thought that must be where the creaking was coming from when I pedalled. Made no difference and checked other components to make sure they weren't rubbing.
I recently serviced the hub and greased it all up. I couldn't figure out how to get into the other side so left it. Could that be the bearing causing the noise or is the freehub probably ready for replacing? The bike was making the noise before, but thought it was down to warn drivetrain. As the noise went away when I swapped it all out I assumed my diagnosis was correct. Seems the noise has come back only a couple of months later :/ Sounds horrible :/
The wheel is a couple of years old and I have done a lot of steep climbing last year so it's not had an easy time.
Any thoughts what might be making the noise? Cassette is new, chain is new, and the chain rings are new too. The pedals seem fine and greased them up a little while ago so don't thing it's those.
Any help would be great as it's driving me mad :/
Thanks in advance 🙂
Cheers Rob
Could be the hub. Lots of videos of servicing hope hubs on line.
Last one I did was a sod to get apart (more than a little old age resistance as it hadn't been apart in five years!) and its just come round to need doing again. The lbs will get it this time as I can't be arsed with the endless mallet bashing to get the axle out.
Grease the seatpost.
Had a similar issue myself recently, and yep it turned out to be the freehub, but on a much cheaper hub...
The good thing about your Hope is that you can pull the FH apart fully inspect, clean and replace any parts as necessary...
Even worse when I'm out the saddle :/
@cookeaa Did it feel like it was coming from the back as it does with mine. Gets quite load if I'm really pushing up a hill.
Not got some of the tools they show on the video so might have to go to lbs :/
What is it, a pro 2? I get creaking with mine quite often, caused by grit in or under the freehub seal. Pulling off the freehub (with cassette attached), give the seal area a good clean and see if that helps before taking to LBS. No tools required.
If the hub is a QR then grease the skewer.
My pro 2 creaked. It was a cracked hub shell.
It's hard to be sure where any noise is really coming from, it correlates with pressure on the pedals and of course reverberates through the frame, which narrows it down to something drive related...
I can see why your first thought was to swap BB, you've eliminated that, now check everything else...
I had a clicking for months and stripped and checked almost everything until I found out it was the 3 bolts that hold the spider onto the crank.
This took me a while to figure out on my bikes. Remove the alloy caps from the axles and grease underneath. I put some grease on the outside edge facing the frame as well. This stops my creaking. It tends to be worse in extended dry periods (remember them?) but can get washed out with wet and slop.
My hardtail creaked in the same way.
Wasn't the hub it turned out to be a lack of grease on the bottom bracket threads
