I'm thinking this is a good idea.

I just sold my Kona Rove bike packing set up.

Thinking of something more mountain bike, but a simple rigid frame with modern geometry. My 95 DBR Axis TT is a lot of fun, but rim brake wheels are becoming a liability.

Are there any other alternatives that look so good?

Cheers.

Other stooges?!

the sour crumble posted on here was lovely but as a stooge owner myself they’re pretty special. I have a mk5

That Sour is particularly lush. I do like non sliding drop outs which rules out a Kona Unit.

Slidey dropouts are the norm for this, surly karate monkey, brother cycles big bro etc

for an EBB it’s usually stooge or singular

I’d be happy without an EBB as well.

Then you have loads of choice, sorry I thought you’d want to run it ss for some reason.

budget end, on one boot zipper or a sonder frontier

else buy some rigid forks and take your pic from say a decent steel manufacturer such as a cotic solaris, Stanton Sedona, etc

I have a Rambler in this roll. Its works well. Probably more capable than i expected off road. I like the looks. But they are heavy. I didn’t know how heavy but it’s there

I’ve got 5 Stooges & once had a Singular - read into that what you will. I’ve had problems with sliding dropouts slipping on other bikes, but never an issue with an EBB.

I usually ride a Banshee, so weight doesn't bother me. I'm looking for a simple, rowdy bike with a bit of style

I’d echo that.  Designing a frame for singlespeed creates a compromise to allow ease of chain tension management that’s robust enough not to slip under load.  If the bike is then used for gears then it creates unnecessary maintaintenance.  Unless of course you value virtual adjustble chainstay length, BB height and seat angle.

Specifically on your bike choice - I picked up a Stooge Mk 2 last year and absolutely love it.  So much so that I’ve literally just ordered a Speedbomb as a stable mate to play the role of more of a trail bike, thanks to its more modern geometry, with the older bike being more of a gravel bike type role.

if you are thinking about a Stooge, drop Andy Stevenson the owner an email with any questions.  He’s super helpful and really passionate about his bikes.

Having owned pretty much every production stooge frame sine the first 5 ss only mk1,  plus a whole host of custom stuff that Andy and I have done togeather, the mew speedbomb with 65mm offset biplane forks is my fave handling "production stooge"

It's not the lightest as the forks have been beefed up due to folks like jeff kendal-weed riding whistler on his and doing mad road gap jumps etc... so it's a seriously capabale bike. Full 29+, stick a duro crux 3.25 up front and it's a monster

Loving my dirt tracker. It absolutely rips but is a lovely laid back ride too. Think they are back in stock in mk 2 version.
