Was aiming for a Gulf scheme so thought Ford colours as a Le Mans GT40 homage.

I know what you mean but the mudguards are washing machine life extenders. Using my wife's Stooge this morning with no rear guard and came home covered in a 2-3mm thick layer of mud up my back...and I didn't even try the muddy trails...this is the "11 months of winter" west of Scotland

Stooge curious here. Anybody built one up super cheap? Thinking of building one ss for the winter. Have bars, stem, saddle, grips and a set of brakes laying around. Just wondering what sort of price I'd need looking at for an El Cheapo winter build. Thoughts?

You could pick up a frame and forks around £250, then everything else is how much you want to pay. £100 Deore/Flows from Merlin, as they'll take a 3" tyre easily - I use 3" Fattys on my Ti on Flows. Chainset and SS kit for under £100 all in - Deore cranks perhaps?

Funkmasterp- yes, my first Stooge (mk1) was built with the sole purpose to be a cheap winter bike and explore SS. I used bits lying about, second hand stuff and some special offers. It cost me £450 all in. I loved it! I rode it through the winter slop and the carried on into summer. Fantastic fun. I ended up rebuilding it with nice components because I spent so much time on it.

I'm now on my second Stooge, mk2, with a nicer SS build, plus the addition of some Stooge Moto bars. They really are good. Nice and wide to help crank up hills and also high rise to take pressure off your hands. The MK2 has plenty of tyre clearance, even with 27.5x3.0 tyres.

So, start with a cheap Stooge build, but be prepared for it to turn into your main bike and therefore (possibly) spending money to get the nice spec it deserves.

Mines running deore and was on 29er wheels built up cheap. But its just had new b+ wheels and I might upgrade it to 1x drive train and some better kit. They do that to you.

Been searching around for my first off road bike and recently stumbled across Stooge and have found a 1st Gen frame for a ridiculous price which I'm very interested in. Just have a few questions......

I'm 6ft 1" Any problems with fit? Should I go for a set back seatpost?

Anyone using an Alfine on their Stooge? I have a spare from a previous build which I will probably use.

What's the rear tyre clearance like with a wide rim such as a Rabbit Hole?

Is the BB a standard 73mm?

I tried a rabbit hole rim on a mk I and clearance was waffer thin. On a Wide lightening rims an ardent 2.4 was OK in summer, but not enough mud clearance for winter 2.2 and 2.3 tries of various shapes and sizes all seems fine.
Great bike.

Thanks for the replies. The frame i was eying up has been sold! Liking the look of the Stooges so much am seriuosly considering getting a 2nd gen frame. What is the rear clearwnce on the newer model? Would rabbit hole / ardent fit easily ? Thinking about it probably would give b+ a go anyway

Hi all, been a while since i've been on here, thought i'd answer a few of the questions that've recently been asked.

Stooge fat is the same geometry as the ti, i've recently finished the final drawings so its ready for production but no timescale set yet,i may well invite pre-orders in the next couple of weeks or so and see what happens, but at the moment i'm working on the gen3 frame and another model which seems to have taken priority. The one downside of being a one-man-band is a complete lack of a Trek sized budget for new models 🙂

Alfine? Yes, the cable routing is all in the ideal place for this, it'll work a treat. I'd recommend a 32 tooth chainring and an 18t rear for goood mountain bikey useful ratios. A mate of mine is building one as we speak.

Rear clearance on a MK2 will happily swallow a 24 Ardent on a Rabbit Hole with good clearance, whereas the MK1 would be too right with this setup. If you can get a MK2 it has infinitely better clearance on the rear. B+ didn't exist when i designed the first frame, but the second frame was specifically redesigned to be able to run a 27.5x3 with excellent clearance. B+ pretty much transforms the bike though, turns it into a bit of a nutter.

The geometry will be the same on the MK3 but there will be a larger size too, for the very tall. I'm finalizing the drawings at the moment so haven't got the ball rolling yet, so at least 6 months away. Brexit has also has a somewhat drastic effect on the value of the pound which has had a pretty big knock-on effect to prices,so at the moment its a case of looking at costs and working a few things out, maybe play the waiting game a while.

Wait - so in total three models in preparations? 😆 Would be happy to replace my mk1 frame with something having a bit more rear clearance... and it would be a bit more easy to find a good dropper post 🙂 I understand that no way before end of the year?

Interested in the planned seat tube ID - any considerations to use 30.9 or larger on mk3 and/or fat?

What would be the rear dropouts in fat? What spacing?

And (!) what is the third model taking a priority?

There will be a 29+ frameset coming from Stooge in the spring, working name Dirt Tracker, it's a completely new design with bi-plane forks and promises to be 'rad'. Drawings are done, production starts very shortly.

So my stooge arrived yesterday 🙂

Starting to build it up now but having seatpost issues 🙁 my dropper isn't long enough.

Straight Thomson will have to do until I get something else in layback.

Was anyone else nervous about running a post above the seatstays?

My Stooge all built up with Gusset lofty, 450mm post sits just under seat stays.

Really pleased with the ride.

I'm just over 6'2" with a 35" inside leg.

Really like it.

Set up with 90mm stem over 45mm spacers, 23degree bend bars.

A lay back post would be nice but can't find one long enough.

Are your bars the Salsa Bend ones? I tried those - and liked them - but the Moto's are the dogs, and help a tall rider's riding position (I am 6'3") and although I managed (lay back seat post, 90 stem with Moto's), the bike really was too small

Jagwire do some natty little alloy stick-on cable guides that run perfectly under one of the top tubes, you can pick them up on ebay for about a fiver, i'd start there.

Took delivery of my new stooge mark 2 in blue last week, used my shonky 26" singlespeed as the donor along with a spare pair of wheels from my croix de fer (19mm internal width so should be OK).
The things I needed to buy were the tyres and a bigger rear cog - a two one ratio is a touch too tall for me. I even managed to get an old pair of 26" stans tubeless rim strips to fit and got the new maxxis high roller/ardent combo setup tubeless first time. I've ridden it twice on my local trails and really like it (apart from the EBB coming loose on my first ride at the furthest part of the woods from my house and me not taking Allen keys with me).
Just a few queries about bars and stem setup as I've tried 2 different setups on my 2 rides and neither allow the front wheel to be lifted particularly easily whilst riding, it is manageable but compared to by 26" Soul the Stooges front end is considerably heavier and I would like to lighten it without ruining the geometry plus I don't have the funds to keep buying bars and stems in the pursuit of the ideal setup.
I'm 5'11" with long arms and a 33" in seam.
Tyres are 2.25" ardent at the rear and 2.3" at the front.
Setup 1. 685mm EA70 low rise monkey bars with a 70mm stem and 25mm of spacers. Too narrow for cranking up hills singlespeed and the front feels glued to the ground.
Setup 2. 760mm Gusset low rise bars with a 60mm stem and 25mm of spacers. This was better for climbing and feels a touch lighter to steer but also a touch more vague in feel when riding single-track. I'm thinking of using the Gusset bars trimmed a touch and ordering a cheap 50mm stem but has anyone tried a 40mm stem with risers?
The stooge motobars look awesome so might put them on the Christmas list, again what size stem have people used with them?

I'm just wanting to know what people who are a similar height to me are using and what they found didn't work.

Although I'm enjoying experimenting with my new toy I'd like to find the best setup sooner rather than later.

The 800 wide Moto's will transform the ride

As for stem, 50 should see you right. That's what my mate runs on his, at 5'11"

Longterm I'd like to try 650B+ wheels and tyres but they'd be a bit spendy at the moment.

Hi Ian, i'm 5'11 and i use Moto bars with a 50mm stem on my main ride and its perfecto. 29er wheels will always make the front feel heavier to lift, with B+ the difference is quite pronounced, have you checked out the Alpkit wheels, sub £200, a real steal. The sweep of the Moto bars also puts your weight slightly further back and helps to keep the front light and skippy. But of course, i would say all this 🙂

I have never run Stooge with 50mm stem yet, but instead I've installed 35mm from day one (1y ago) and I was never considering trying something longer.

Especially in 29+ setup Stooge is very nimble at low and high speed yet still keeping its stability. There is no significant wheel leap effect which contributes greatly to that nice feeling. I am able to clear steep climbs while seated without front wheel popping up. I make a weight shift on the climbs of course, but nothing dramatic.

in 279+ setup I am running currently - there is some geo change I can feel as less neutral steering, but still the effect is very small and climbs are fine.

Overall I could safely encourage you going my path 😉

Thanks for the advice. I'll be buying a set of B+ wheels and tyres and Stooge motobars next year and I'll have a look at the Alpkit wheels although I might just rebuild my hope hubs off the Soul into new rims. I've currently settled on the following setup for my Stooge and think it rides fantastically.

29er front and rear (maxxis 2.30 high roller front and 2.25 ardent rear).
Singlespeed 34/19
170mm Middle burn cranks
40mm stem
30mm spacers
760mm mid rise riser bars
SDG saddle and seatpost
EBB rotated down and back (having a half link chain has helped to achieve this) keeping my weight low and back for better balance and weight off the bars.

I've tried lots of different bars and stem combinations and the current ones fitted are in my opinion the best so far, the steering feels fast almost telepathic yet the riding position is quite relaxed a little bit like my old 2010 Orange 5 but without the squish or should that be squash (sorry).

My Cotic Soul now feels too low at the front and really twitchy compared to the Stooge, my Soul has 760mm bars, 70mm stem and 120mm forks and I've ridden all sorts on it as it was my sole mountain bike (I did have a single speed mountain bike, I don't count that though as it's had a child seat on it for the last few years), I never found my Soul lacking before owning the Stooge.

I'm really enjoying the Stooge at the moment especially in singlespeed mode and has helped me recapturer my love my mountain biking, every ride I want to see what else I can ride on it - the steep drop off here the tricky muddy climb with a double step there. I'm pleasantly surprised what I can ride on it, it's also my 1st 29er which I was quite negative towards previously.

No, if you want to fun fat bike wheels in a stooge you'll need the stooge fatty bike (which is ace) or talk nicely to andy and go down the custom route

I have a 3.8 Hodag B+(+?) up front with a 3" B+ rear. Best combo I've tried on the Stooge. Needs a different fork as the Hodag wont fit in stock

Haha! No! It's just how I think it feels, I had a shot my Soul last night and it just felt all wrong, the steering felt like it flopped from side to side, the stooge feels so nice when I corner that I find myself weaving left to right when even riding along a fire road. It has so much feel that it was encouraging me to push hard in the corners so it drifts a little bit knowing I can catch it before drifting too much.

It's just fun, simple no nonsense fun.

put mine back to single speed last night. I had a 1x11 XT setup lying about, so I fitted it and did a good ride. whilst it was nice, I preferred the look and feel of it being a singley. so, armed with a glass of whiskey, a quick visit to the man cave, she is back to being uber sexy. hopefully get some quality time on her this week.

At the link below is a pic of my Stooge this morning. I've just completed 9000km on it according to Strava. Taken 17 months. I still look forward to getting out on it and come back with a smile on my face. A couple of mates rode it over the last couple of days and i rode one of their bikes. Both came back reminded of how good it is and I was reminded why I haven't looked at another bike...except a Mk2...if anyone's got one

An update from Mr Stooge on the upcoming Mk3

seeing as you asked, here's a little info on the MK3. First off, they're being made at the moment, i'd like to say 3 months away but these things have a habit of dragging out a little. So, 2 sizes - the current size with a 18" seat-tube and a 23.5" top tube, and a 20" with a 24.8" ETT and slightly taller headtube. 44mm headtube, tapered steerer steel fork, 15mm shorter chainstays (430mm + or - 7mm due to EBB), fatter downtube, slightly fatter top tubes. I've stuck with a 27.2 post because of the comfort, plus there are plenty of 27.2 droppers available now.This new one is optimised around B+ because i love the way it rides, but you can still run 29 rear/29+ front if you want.

Why a 44mm headtube? Couple of reasons really, a lot of people wanted to run a carbon fork on their MK2's but couldn't, and the axle to crown of the fork is the same as a sagged 120mm B fork or a 100mm 29er, so if you really wanted to you could.

This very nearly didn't happen because of Brexit and the weak pound, it's added a huge amount to the bill compared to the MK2 so the price is going to have to rise i'm afraid, but it'll still be cheaper than anything else out there. I think its going to be a rad bike in some very splendid colours, though i do need to keep some secrets until the frames drop

I thought i'd post it here too, as it's essentially the Stooge Bible.

Lazy question...to avoid going though the thread

I have a 29er Velocity Dually rim which I was considering building into a front wheel for my daughter's Stooge, until discussion with Rosscopeco above, who suggested building it into a rear wheel for my Mk2. If I did that, I'd be planning to put something like a Maxxis Chronicle on it.

Has anyone tried a Dually and a 29plus tyre on the rear of a Mk2? I have a Blunt that I was planning to use on the rear, but would would like more inflation and width if I can get it.

OK I've had a few emails in relation to my post above so I'm going to post a link to the bike in its current spec /condition.

Frame has its fair share of scrapes and scratches Inc tyre rub plus light surface rust (pictured) but is all in perfect working order.

The XT cranks look right at home

Are those Loop bars? How are they on the Stooge. Looking to build up a Mk3 B+ and may go Loops

Shameless photo opportunity! My new (to me) Mk2, setup as a SS with a 29+ front end and 650b+ rear.

WTB Ranger in 27.5x3 on a 40mm DT Swiss was far more capable than I thought it would be. I thought that coming from a 26x3.8 (on my other bike) would be very noticeable in terms of grip and cush, but it was very very close. Much faster for sure and as such you were through most things before loss of grip became a factor. Sliding about was actually good fun too!

I've wanted to scratch the MTB SS itch for a while now and this [u]did not[/u] disappoint. I can see me riding this more than any other set up I've got.

Really surprised how good and easy it was...far faster than I thought it would be as you tend to carry more speed into obstacles and corners...me legs hurt a bit though so it was obviously harder than usual! Need to loose some more weight and get a bit fitter!

Thanks for all replies in my search for a frame.

Had to put a 2.8 on mine in the rear as clearance was very tight as the 3.0 were on 52 rims

Got a MK1 purple with a couple of stone chips, can anyone recommend a suitable touch up pen that's a reasonable match? Perhaps for a particular car make/model so I could source it at Halfords?
Hang on, this isn't 1978, they don't do purple cars any more. Um, options?

After much hunting for a match I eventually opted for a few Humbrol model paint tins and mixed them together till I got a match...or very close.

Just taken on a mk1 stooge (courtesy of happybiker) - been through the thread, but it goes back two years - is there a general consensus on best value and performing rim/tyre combo for the front?
Knards started populate but seem to be no good in wet/mud?

Next obvious question - anyone with a 29+ front wheel they want to sell?

Happy with Chronicles on wtb asym i35, good balance of weight and width.
Crc has Eason Arc rims in 40 and 45 with on offer.
All plus tyres suck in muddy conditions.

29+ minion and surly dirt wizard are bloomin ace in filth and slop...or as its also known, UK weather for 99% of the time, except for that one random day when the sky is blue and trails are dry.

Vittoria bomboloni is a good all rounder and the new canoli looks to be a good front to compliment the faster bombo on the rear
