Some unmentionables climbed a couple of fences in to my garden this evening and pried open the back door to our garage (while we were upstairs putting the wee one to bed) between 7:50pm and 8:10pm and stole my Trek Stache 5 (turquoise 17.5" frame) and my wife's Trek Stache 7 (purple 17.5") frame. Obviously this is gutting. It seems to have been targeted as they left/ignored several other bikes and all this only 2 years after the last 2 mountain bikes were stolen!

The Stache 5 was recently upgraded from rigid to have Manitou forks on the front and SLX drivetrain and brakes as well as Maxxis Minions on the front and back. The Stache 7 is pretty much a stock 2016 model except for newish Deore brakes and ovalised Absolute Black chainring.

Please keep your eyes peeled online and in the real world and message me if you see/hear anything?

Thanks

Redmex you are spot on about the level of bike theft. Mate and I were lucky as we watched a guy on a bike try to steal mates santa Cruz off back of his car. Thankfully we reacted quick and he scarpered but seems to have been bad across the city this year.

Whereabouts ? My neighbour had 5 bikes taken weekend before last, coincidentally on the Sunday I was out for a ride and happened across a young lad on a split new Bronson , when ineyeballed him and then the bike he put his good up and legged it. Police were at my door when I got back anyway so they went looking for him. Definitely awful, this was all Colinton/Bonaly

We’re in the Alnwickhill area, up on the edge of the Braid Hills near the old Liberton water works. It’s just over two years since the last theft so who knows, could be they were just keeping me on the ‘revisit’ list. I have a feeling they saw bikes on the car after a trip out or something like that but we’ll probably never know for sure. The police were round late last night to take a statement and also said that Edinburgh was right up there as one of the worst cities in Europe for bike theft which seems quite a claim but then I have just added to the statistic!

My local policeman said they have 4 officers FT on bike thefts as it is so rife.

Well I’ll not get my hopes up but it is good to hear that there are people working on the issue. I appreciate that there is more serious crime to tackle but the scale of the issue, particularly in Edinburgh would suggest that this is a big money maker for some people that may well go on to fund other, more ‘serious’ crime.

Had a very disappointing conversation with my insurers though so I’ll be looking to change ASAP. Any suggestions gratefully received.

I’ve not had to claim from them but hearing good stories from a coupel of folk who have convinced me to go with Pedalcover. I’m utterly paranoid about being seen transferring bikes between storage and the back of the van (or roof of the car) but nowt much I can do about that.

Staches are quite rare. I’ve got a permanent search set up for them on eBay so will keep a look out. They tend to pop up in my FB marketplace feed too due to, ahem, recent searches by me.

Thanks both for the recommendation and keeping an eye out on FB and the like. I’ll add Pedalcover to the list. Have also seen some good feedback about them online.

I had my bike stolen from outside my workplace (Edinburgh Royal Infirmary) earlier this year, and thought that I'd never see it again.  But about a month later I got a call from the police saying they had found it in Leith, and returned it to my door the next day.  It helped that I had pictures and a frame number for the bike.

I've given the police pictures and an exhaustive parts list as I had spent quite a lot of time (and money) upgrading the Stache 5. In fact it had only been ridden in its final, completed form once at Glentress a couple of weeks ago on some of the off-piste trails. It was great! The Stache 7 was a little more 'stock' but had a couple of upgrades. Both were bought second-hand via PinkBike and eBay and so I don't have original receipts for the bikes although I do for quite a few of the upgraded parts. Nor (which seems particularly foolish now given that this is the second time this has happened) do I have frame numbers. The Stache 5 photo shows it before all the upgrades too, with rigid forks so is not truly representative. I suppose it has given me a checklist of things to do with any remaining bikes and any purchases for the future.

Good to hear about the return of your bike st66, I cling to a very slim hope but it is a slim, slim hope.

On the subject of frame numbers the original owners may have them if you have contact details.

My last bike that got nicked in Edinburgh (from outside a pub while I was having a pint) I called Edinburgh Bicycle who were able to email a copy of the invoice for the bike with the frame number straight away. I claimed on the insurance (with Pedal Cover) and all was dealt with without any problems.

Bikmo is worth a look. Not cheap but fairly comprehensive. Not had to claim though
