There's an interesting article on the BBC website about a chap in Cambridge tracking down folks' stolen bikes and outing the thieves live online; he appears to have recovered around 500!
I suspect that this approach won't be effective for stolen to order or high value bikes that are broken down, but it's pretty impressive.
There are issues of course of safety and vigilantism, but it seems clear that bike crime isn't a priority for the police.

I think it's a great idea and he's making it work, you gotta applaud him and his organisation.
Bike Vigilantes across the country would be a great idea. I'd join up :o)
Same as JAG.
Yeah however are MONSTER T bombers allowed to play a part.
If so-count me in!
There's a whole FB group dedicated to the groups work tracking the antics of a small group of feral youths who are responsible for 95% of bike and moped theft in Cambridge.
Sadly the Police seem mildly indifferent to the situation (or under resourced) and on the rare occasion when someone does get prosecuted, it's just a community service order and they're out stealing the same afternoon.
