Does anyone have any particularly good recommendations for where to stock up on these on the cheap?

I used my last gear cable and bit of outer on Friday. Maybe outer on the roll and then a good few gear cables, the slightly longer ones if possible, I find my cable routing combined with a XL frame means the extra length is useful

Also need the ends and things (whatever they're called!)

(Gear cables, not brake cables!)

Also keen on a roll of decent outer. Used to be able to find 10m of SP41 for £15. Cheapest I can find is £30

Just boughtening "Bike GEAR Outer Cable casing housing 4mm (10 Meters) Fibrax Black" from ebay for under a tenner posted.

cyclefanatic on ebay*.

Edit: Getting some cables too. £6.39 for 10 galvanised . or £20 for 10 "premium slick" ones

Edit again: And £5 off orders of £35 or more. so I got 30m of outer for £25 and the £20 Fancy Dan cables. £40 posted for the lot.

*  turns out to be Fibrax themselves, according to he paypal receipt

Ferrules, but I stopped using them ages ago - just stick a blob of superglue on the end of the cable. It's neater and you can re-use the cable with having to chop the end off.

Ferrules are for the ends of the outer. Cable ends or crimps are for the cables themselves. I use Fire Wire cable ends, which are reusable. I think I got them from Cyclorise but I can't find them on their site any more. Available in several colours if you find them, just visible in this shot.

I stand corrected. You're right now I think about it.

Re-usable cable ends! What a time to be alive! 😉

Them's ferrules as well Ben. A quick search shows this is what's in a Shimano gear cable set:

Shimano SIS Gear Cable Kit includes :
2 x Shimano Outer SIS Gear Cables. Length : 600mm.
3 x Shimano Outer SIS Gear Cables. Length : 320mm.
2 x Galvanised inner Gear cables. Length : 2275mm. 10 x Plastic Outer Cable Ferrules.
2 x Cable ends. Ideal for MTB / Hybrid use.

I tried contacting that seller on ebay but they don't take questions for some reason. I was going to ask if they have SS rather than galvanised cables

The outer cable at less than a tenner for 10m seems like good value. Is the Fibrax stuff as good as anything else?

this is what I got.  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252485394691 10 mtb ended "slick stainless steel"

I ended up getting 30m of outer, £25. as that put it over the threshold for a fiver off, so 30m for £20, rather than 10 for £10

I think that's what he's asking with his second sentence!

last time this came u there were a couple of people saying the Clarks stuff was perfectly good.  I bought this assuming it can't be worse than that.  We'll see!

It's probably exactly the same stuff.  Can't be worth too many people making it!

Decathlon sell an inner cable coated with what appears to be a similar finish to the expensive shimano xtr inners for a lot less ££.

I have big boxes of Clarks lined gear and brake outer cable. As far as I can tell, it's as good as anything else I've ever used and, having loads of it means I tend to change it more often which I think is more important than using posh cables.

I've never bulk-bought inners (despite using more of it than I would like!) so am interested in good, cheap options here.

they're one of those things that if you one, you need one. £6 in Evans/LBS bought singly, and if you're buying online so you never have to pay that, you may as well get a few in.

Last time I stocked up I gambled on Clarks outer from eBay and 100 gear cables.

Same as above,as I've got loads I change it when it needs doing and have better shifting because of it

Does anyone put anything over the exposed cable at the mech? It’s the only place crap can get in now running full length outer, so I was thinking of zip tie a bit of road inner tube, or is this a stupid idea that will get me laughed off the hill side?

I use a waterproof cable kit from wiggle, has ferrules with pipes on the end you can slip a pipe over to cover exposed cable.

I always buy stainless inners, they are just smoother & stay smoother longer.

Even cheap outer can be made to work well by squaring off the cut ends with the face of an angle grinder disc. I cut it with an angle grinder with a 2mm thick blade these days, it does a much cleaner job.

And use a small drill bit to clean out the inner nylon sleeve, it makes a big difference.
