Used to be "customary" to get 10% (or free upgrades worth more than 10%) off a new bike purchase, but realise it's now more of a sellers market.

Can I still hope for a sweetened deal, or will I be encouraged to foxtrot oscar?

For context: mid-range full sus, looking for an upgrade worth around 10% of bike's RRP and prepared to buy another brand elsewhere if no deal available.

I haven't had to discount a bike for 4 months now. Certainly wouldn't at the moment either as there is nothing left.

He knows haha!
I'm hoping not discounting becomes the new normal. Totally crazy doing it when stock is limited anyway.

I got a discount off a new bike last week as the shop matched another.
Do have to wait about 3 months for it though.

Maybe if you want an XS or 2XL in a gopping colour or unpopular model 😉

^This^

Good bike shops have sold out of good bikes. Some industry folks I've spoken to have reported that customers have stopped asking for* discounts.

*Which in itself is a step away from just expecting them as some sort of divine right.

Any news on any new stock coming from you guys in the trade? Are they going to bring forward the 2021 models?

Think 2021 will be a good year for discounts on bikes. There will be a lot of good second hand bikes coming on the market come winter with people buying them as a fad in lockdown. I see it with a couple near me who bought 2 high end bikes now sitting one with a puncture at the back of the garage unused. Another lad bought a nice Emile because his mates had them but after 100 miles he’s admittedly it’s not for him and putting it up for sale. Everything is swings and roundabouts

Yep, watch the second hand market in February, when Christmas credit card bills start to land on doormats/in inboxes.

As to 2021 models, they're already starting to appear (see the front page for some sweet skinwall Epic Evo action), and they're already selling. My LBS has recently sold five or more 2021 S-Works sight unseen! (Tarmacs and Epics mainly. The latter on the front page now, the former...Hubbah, hubbah, hubbah.) They're also selling any and all Rockhoppers before the boxes have even landed on these shores.

It's not going to be easy to pull models forward in the timing though, as so much of the supply chain has been disrupted over recent months. I suspect we'll see more bike companies moving away from the model year concept, as the likes of Whyte and Orange have already done.

That's quite difficult to do. They don't usually have warehouses full of next years stock weeks / months before it is launched.

We've already had some 2021 stuff in (and mostly already sold) with a bit more arriving late July / August but some models now have due dates of Jan / Feb for orders placed now.
