Do these exist or are they all pretty flexi?
Looked at the shimano AM 5 but review states they're not that stiff.
I'm coming from some superstiff bont riot so think I would miss the power transfer feel, but like the look of some more flat-style lace-up shoes.
Any recommendations or is this a contradictory requirement (flat style with stiff sole)?
They do exist, but they're not the norm...
They're quite a bit stiffer than my AM9's, they work well with "normal" (non platform) SPD's still, where the AM9's feel too flexy and unsupportive without a platform pedal. The twin Boa system is great too...
Not sure I'd have paid £160 for them mind...
Mboy I think your post is missing a link?
XC5?
Five Ten Hellcat Pros, I just got a pair from a PSA on here...£59 from Adidas.co.uk
They're pretty stiff for that style of shoe, definitely stiffer than my more xc styled Shimano ones.
I've got 5:10 kestral lace. Not an XC race stiffness but way better than the shimano AM things i had before. Use them on my CX bike and mtb.
Vans Warner SPD were stupidly stiff. Older Bontrager's commuter/urban model was quite stiff as well, to the point where the sole broke by the cleat...
Apologies. Don’t know why the link didn’t work first time round...
EDIT: it seems as if there’s something wrong with the “link” function... May explain why I’ve just had to edit this post too.
There is a reason that flat shoes are not as stiff as SPD shoes and that's because you need more flex to control the bike with flat shoes. The extreme case is BMX or jump bikes where the shoe will be very flexible but most are stiffer than that but don't go for anything as stiff as you would ride on clipless pedal.
@thebrick....they are for riding clipless.
Thanks all for the suggestions I’ll have a look through those.
I bought a set of ion flat sole shoes as I wanted to try something different instead of just fivetens. The sole was too stiff for me but could be worth a look (think the flat shoe was very much based off of their clipped shoe).
The Ion Rascals are a good bet, I've had them for the last 3 years.... My first pair lasted about 8 months then the stitching started to come away, Ion simply sent me a new pair no quibbles. I had the originals stitched up at the cobblers which and are still in use as my winter shoes.
Quick update - I did a bit more research on what I liked the look of and if reviews said they had decently stiff soles and went for Giro Chamber II - just turned up from Merlin and yet to ride but seem to be just the ticket.
