You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
MrsCeepers has expressed a desire to have a decent hardtail to use but is reluctant to spend any of "her" money on one. Spying an opportunity, I'm intending to rebuild my Transition trans am with spares/ girly size bits for her, freeing me up to port the transitions current bits onto a new (birthday) hardtail frame with her permission! Result!
Current favourite option is the stif morf being similar to the trans am but a bit longer and slacker and therefore "on trend" and based on a 130 fork which is what I have standing by.
Any other options? Think the stantons are out on cost, soul obviously but it's not as slack. Bird zero or ragley something maybe?
Any feedback on these appreciated.
Ive quite fancied a Morf myself for quite a while so I shall watch this thread with interest. My two problems with the Morf are getting hold of one in yellow (Theyve been out of stock for months and even now are still showing 4+ weeks) and, to a minor extent, I dislike the no graphics look (and the one Morf graphic is does have looks a bit pants. Nice headtube badge though)
Not mine but if you go 29 there's a cracking frame in the classifieds - Chromag Rootdown
I got a Surface a few months back (essentially the same frame) that I'm just building up now...had similar thoughts to you about other options and that's what I went for
Needs to be 27.5 otherwise I've got to buy new wheels as well!
I've had a Morf (in yellow) since October and used it daily for everything from All day rides to dh and even some dirt jumps.
It was dropping the chain a bit so fitted a chain guide. Other than that and replacing a few consumables i have t touched it.
It's slack enough for really steep dh runs, copes with all the big drops and gaps beautifully and is fine up any climb.
I haven't got a bad word to say about it
The ragley big pig looks good. Last fast forward is nice too. There are also the ns bikes hardtails. Though sadly they don't sell the cromo as a frame only.

Not touched my full suss, since getting my full build a few months ago.Really comfy and capable in Peaks and Dales and a few trail center rides.Taking it to bpw in July, if it flaters me there, full sus is up for sale
they do look right. i love the yellow but having seen a grey one in the flesh i was surprised it actually looks really really good
Ridden a mates. Felt right from the start. Looks a lot better in the flesh - the yellow version.
I went for a P7 as no Morf in stock. One on eBay for 374 at the moment in non standard colour and also nice black and orange one locally for £400. The latter brand spanking new, though the one on eBay looked that way.
My bud has had back issues in the past with hardtails. Had his 8 months or so and he rates the Morf highly. He's a great rider too, and has lots of experience on a huge range of bikes.
How do they size up?
I'm just under 5'7 so short or medium ?
P7 is another option how does it compare to the morf as you've ridden both?
I'm 5"8 and very happy on the medium
P7 not arrived yet. Morf was lovely. Felt a bit like my old Chromag but waay longer/slacker. Chose the orange because they had a sale on and the P7 seemed as close as it could be number wise.
I'm 5'8" and the Morf felt right in medium.
Look great. I'd look at the pace frames too. Look ace and similar geo
If you like the look of it then the DMR Trailstar has similar geometry.
Having a hoot on mine, first couple of rides on were on lots of off-piste singletrack and some DH'ish trails. But this week I've been out for a couple of longer rides on it, and whilst it's no XC whippet it's comfy for XC rides with some techy singletrack thrown in.
NS Eccentric CroMo nearly rides as plush as a Blue Pig but is lighter and cheaper. The latest BP being overweight and overpriced, unless you get one in one of CRC's fake news sales 😆 what they are really worth.
Was after a Morf myself but was a touch too expensive for me, it being a 4130 HT after all said and done. Oh and costing 200 quid more than the NS Eccentric I bought. Don't get me wrong it's probably the most detailed CroMo frame around and that obviously costs.
Had an older BFe (same geo as a Soul) and the seatpost was too slack, was like sitting on the back axle! The geometry revisions have improved things but not gone far enough compared to the competition IMO.
There's the Commencal Meta HT CrMo, Pace RC127, Orange P7 and On One Dee Dar to consider.
Thanks for the help so far!
Phoned Stif who say the factory is being difficult about delivery dates so they don't know when they will have them. I'm not buying until june/july anyway.
Still unsure on sizing. Current bike is 417 + 50mm stem.In theory longer is better right?
The short morf (which their chart puts me on) is 425 but supposed to be ridden with a 35mm stem.
So its either go with the short and keep the 50mm stem or go with the medium 435 reach and stick a 35mm or 40 stem on later if it feels too long with the 50?
Seat tube length looks ok on the medium.
opinions?
I'd go short, i'm 5'8" (32" inseam) on a 16.5"(small) Slackline Next Gen.
The seattube on the Slackline is 419mm and only just got away with a 125 mm dropper. The 380mm seattube on the short morf will let you run what dropper you wish, and you still have longer reach (425morf vs 414slackline)
Hardtails should be smaller imo
Edit: and running a 50mm stem here
Second the shorter hardtails thing unless you're bashing miles out.
Don't want to be ploughing through rock gardens too often on a HT. Keep it nimble.
sell a kidney the Stantons are worth it !
Is that a switchback? They do look lovely and the geometry looks good but I'm going to be pushing it to spend £500 on a frame sadly.
Slackline. It's not quite as long/ slack as the Switchback. I'm running it with 130 Pikes and it's fab. I grabbed one just before the price hike; revised prices are expensive but it's the best fitting/ handling/ comfiest/ frame I've had.
