My GX eagle is now about 2yrs old, and on the last couple of rides has started to get a bit grumbly, its at (or over) 0.75 on the chain checker, so assumed it was just 'slipping' as over worn.
Anyway, cleaned up the bike properly whilst I wait for replacement drivetrain bits, and it seems a few sticky links in the chain are actually the problem.
Does this indicate the chain is badly worn and about to fail causing me to crash into a baby robin and burst into fire, or just free them up and a good chance of continuing to run for ages....
I could just replace anyway, and was expecting to, but if I can get away with running what I have until the weather improves.... then its worth a go.
Basically, do you recon its worth chancing it for being tight, or just bite the bullet and replace?
Wear tends to happen at the roller, sticky links tend to be corrosion or gunk in between the pins and plates so it can't turn properly
What chain lube do you use? Could the cold weather be causing it to thicken up?
Are you sure the links are sticking, and its not just them getting stuck on hooked teeth on the chainring or cassette?
Yeah skipping when running round jockey wheels, when Ive worked them loose so they stop sticking and now bend again runs smooth free.
Sounds like its worth giving the chain a deep clean a re-lube (using putoline for what its worth <canOworms>) and seeing how it goes, worst comes to it if the chain brakes Ill pop in a quick link then replace the lot.
Or just take it off stick it in a plastic bottle, (I use those screw tope baked bean fridge packs) spray some wd40 or other penetrant, shake, leave over night, dry off wd40 and do same with some lube, shake, leave, shake, leave, repeat, dry off with cloth. New chain.
