You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I have a bit of first world problem like buying dilemma. My existing mountain bike is a orbea Alma Hydro Aluminum 29er. The frame is too small for me I am 5 foot 9. I am considering replacing it with an on one inbred 18 inch frame is that will allow me to Port most of my parts over. But, I'm also looking at a truck Roscoe 8.The retrogrouch in Cheapskate in me says to stick with the 29er format, given all the parts I have laying around, and just be satisfied with a decent blue color all-rounder build. But, the Trek Roscoe eight is certainly fun to ride, and the geometry seams to fit the newer trails that are being built. Then again, I'm just an overweight middle-aged weekend warrior type mountain biker. Some people are saying that the 20 on your platform is dead and will be discontinued by most manufacturers in a couple of years similar to what happened to 26 inch bikes. But, the marketing hype for the 27.5 platform is awfully reminiscent of that when 29ers first came out. Most of my rides are one to two hour fitness type ride on Midwestern singletrack. Not really into downhilling, hucking, or jumps.... so the roscoe seems a bit Overkill. Although the boost hubs, dropper post, and slack geo seem good for a shory clyde.
Looking for thoughts from the peanut gallery.
You are short so I would have thought it will be easier for you on a 27.5

You are short
5'9" isn't "short", is it?
Uh,
Yeah. Shorter than me.

LOL.... it's not actually a thing you know. Find the right bike for you then when you need tyres/tubes check the wheel size. You could find a 29r frame that has a better geo and move parts to that
The Roscoe looks like a great bike and it seems to use the same frame as the new X-Caliber . That means that you could also run it with 29 inch wheels if the mood takes you .
What 29er wheels have 141 bost spacing
5'9" isn't "short", is it?
Sort people often say things like that.
i didn't realise my bike was a 'platform'...that might explain why it rides so badly.

Wheel size is not a function of hub spacing.
So to answer the question. Any wheel which is built using a 29er rim with a boost 141 hub.
...
What’s with the 29er for tall people bollocks. Wasn’t that the thing to say five years ago. Move on people. Have a sit on a few bikes, demo if possible and buy what suits. I love 29ers and I’m 5ft 9” with tiny legs. Will I die?

This. And unless you're hoarding big stocks of wheels and/or tyres, not sure why "all the parts laying around" would be a problem. If it fits you and you like how it rides, it's not worth worrying about.
Seems to be more 29ers about than ever, particularly if you count all the 27.5plus stuff that will take 29er wheels too.

No kidding. ..i am not a moron. .. my point was no one makes a 29er wheel with 141 boost spacing
Did they start making On Ones longer? As mine was pretty damned short even for an 18", though I've not taken the time to check their current ones, or compare it with your orbea.
Have you looked at the other cheap 29" options, with more modern geo, which don't mean you turn all gnrrr but are just good fun bikes.

Or even the Pinnacle Ramin series
(assuming these are available option for you, in the midwest???)
PS: I firmly in the stick to 29 camp BTW 😉

Hope & DT Swiss to name but two...
Boost 141 is just Boost 148 with QR end caps instead of 12mm bolt through. If you buy a Boost Hope or DT wheel, exchange the 12mm end caps for QR, magically you now have a Boost 141 wheel!
Indeed. No one builds fat bike wheels with rohloff off shelf either.
It's not exactly a hardship to get wheels built. Factory wheels are often compromised anyway due to their restricted components. For example mavic rims are decent but their hubs are poor.... Shimano hubs are decent but their spokes are piss poor.....

Yes. I am in the U.S. on one imbred and bikes direct gravity are the only 2 frames i can find with regular spacing and straight headtube.
Don't worry about mid age and being overweight too much.
Don't worry about 27.5 "in a couple of years"!
Don't worry about "only biking on weekends"!
Try new stuff! Have fun!
Sneak a new 27.5 inch 2.3 tire 25 mm rim modern geo full suspension bike into the trunk of your car and drive to the next beautiful trail.
Once on the trail you will stop thinking about the "next platform".
Simply enjoy! Laugh! Scream. Be happy!
Biking also means: STOP THINKING!
Tracy Moseley is 5 foot 4 and raced a 29er to a ridiculous number of EWS wins, I think 5 foot 9 will be alright.
You can't second guess the bike industry, there's no point trying, get the bike you want as the bastards will find some way to make it obsolete tomorrow if they feel like it (hey, everyone's moved over to post mounts meaning that adapting to new brake standards is way harder, time to change that...). So don't fuss, buy for today.

What good does that do you when the frame is 141 ?

You can get inserts to size down lower 1.5 (tapered) headsets to 1 1/8, so don't let that stop you.
