In an effort to fix a click I get on my road bike (same place on the pedal stroke) I figured I'd check pedals and chainring bolts. Googling the recommended torque for the bolts came back with 12-16Nm (from Shimano's web-site) so I set my torque wrench to 15Nm and promptly sheared the first bolt. Only then did I Google shearing chainring bolts and saw lots of people complaining they're made of cheese and Shimano's recommendation is way too high (with going as low as 8Nm suggested a few places)...
I've ordered some replacement genuine Shimano bolts (for an R8100 chainset, although it looks like they fit most recent models) but I'm thinking I'd prefer stainless steel or Ti really. Shimano only list them as M8 x 10.1mm, does that mean the pitch is 'standard' 1.25mm? I can't find any options I'm confident will fit but I figure they must be common? Any recommendations? Ideally T30 but hex would be OK.
When my alloy chainring bolt progressively sheared on the way into work one morning, I ended up in the bike shop half way there getting some lovely ss dura ace bolts. But the type where it's two bits that tighten together so pitch is irrelevant. Can't remember if they were hex both sides or old school slot on the back.
I assume nowadays it's a single bolt into threads on the chain set if you are concerned about pitch.
