Hi
What i'm after is a classic winter road bike that'll run ss. I'm currently using an Alu ss/fixed frame on the road but really want a steel frame with the chance to put on full mudguards. What's about in steel, it can be 4130 and not anything flash, that'll do? only thing i've come accross is a Salsa Casseroll and i've already built one up as a light tourer.
Cheers
I sold my really old steel frame as it flopped around like a cloth in dishwater.......
I havnt replaced it yet but any good quality frame will accept the modern mudgards... Even the Trek Madone Carbon........(cause its pictured on the box!!!!)
I personally would stick with the Alu.....
Il Pompino.
or maybe a road rat
i'd like to keep my road brakes so no cross bikes or hybrids.
this really has got me and i've not been able to come up with much in the way of frame and/or fork options.
what about this

its 4130 and you should be able to pick one up for 10% off that (and all the stickers come off if your bothered)
cant run gears though unless you stick a hub gear on there
i've got a black flat bar version (which I may be selling)
Genesis Day 1?
I bought an old Claud Butler 531 frame. The old ones had long semi horizontal drop outs and no hanger, so easy to run s/s. I have bolt on wide 700c wheels that take a BMX freewheel and 28c tyres. Proper full guards fit. Possible only downside? I run a quill stem old brakes. You could convert the quill, and you could probably find long reach calipers. All in with new paint under a ton, though I did have a few bits.
Genesis Day One? Apart from the track ends (see other thread) I enjoy it a lot.
That not quite CLASSIC bike above though, mmmm. I enjoy that a lot too.
something like triton bikes,
will post more info, when i remember or a GS turns something up.
Do Traitor Cycles do one?

traitor/triton, close enough, also like Pearson....

Langster steel?
I have this for sale on ebay at the moment...

I'm also thinking about selling my Singular Peregrine with Alfine hub.
I've been thinking about this recently. Do I 'fixie' up my old 531 racer i bought for £50 (new wheels, flip flop hub, BB and chainring)
Saw this a minute ago and love the look of it

Is it worth the £?
Hmmm not bad, could do it cheaper yourself. Looks like a powder coated frame,so no telling if it really is 531.
Monies in chainset, wheels and saddle.
Think you could buy a frame, do a nicer colour and add a bling Brooks for £100 less.
What about Pearson? They do a steel singlespeed. Or a nice old 531 frame with semi-horiz drop-outs as above?
find yourself any nice road frame, then get Argos Racing cycles to replace the rear dropouts and get them to paint it as you wish.
The frame above is an ideal candidate for cross conversion.
It's designed for 271/4" wheels and guards, so 700c with CX tyres fitted go in no problem. Buy some canti bosses from Ceeway and bingo, steel singlespeed crosser.
You mean my frame oldgit? (apologies for the thread hijack)
271/4 " wheels?
I can't see any practical advantage of going for steel over aluminium for a winter road bike.
No mine tricky. 27 1/4" wheels the predecessors to 700C.
Common right up to the early eighties. Another characteristic of these older frames were the long dropouts and no gear hanger.
finbar no advantage as such, but a smooth ride that seems to suit the slower winter conditions. That sounds like nonsense, but I know what I mean :?.
I have a swobo del norte. I love it. Keep trying to sell it but can't part with it. Perfect for everywhere except where i live. 🙁
