After reading the 29er FS weight thread, thought I would ask about steel ht's as that's what I ride at the moment.
There seems to be plenty of 120-140mm forked, wide bar/short stem, etc type bikes on here.
So what sort spec and weight is your ht?

On One 456 built like my heckler weighs about the same due to lower spec bits and tougher wheels
still rides fine
Weighed my BFe frame (17.5 inch) after getting it powder coated and it was 5 1/2 lbs. They cocked up and ended up with 2 layers of powder coat on it, but doubt that adds too much (nice extra protection though).
No idea on finished wieght, but with coil Pikes it's never going to be 26 pounds! Building up a 456 as a singlespeed this weekend and that will be a good deal lighter with air Manitous up front, etc.
My Stumpy EVO is 28 1/2 pounds. I would think the BFe is heavier, even without a dropper seatpost.

My Soul was about 26lbs, built for allround use. Maybe as much as 27lbs, depended on the tyres.

16" inbred with cheap build spec - mainly bits nicked from my old FSR. RF Deus xc stem & bars are probably lightest bits. Oh, and it has 08 Rebas on it.
Wheels are pretty heavy. Crankset is budget Shimano, seatpost was cheapest I could find on CRC. It weighs around 29/30 lbs. Pretty sure it's a fair bit heavier than my 2010 Stumpjumper FSR.

my dialled PA is really close to docrobsters in spec, so hope his weight is accurate.
ime a hardtail built for use, weighs a shade under 30lbs, just like a full susser built for fun weighs a shade over 30lbs.
incidently, all my mtb and car tyres are inflated to 30psi

Weighed with hand held luggage scales soobalias, so who knows!
The frame weight tallied with what other people had weighed theirs at so no reason to doubt it really. 🙂

Powder coating my large soul frame added 38 grams, so I wouldn't loose any sleep over an extra coat.

I've got a pretty heavy lobster 853, and rode a mate's alloy lobster, with much lighter gear on too. Got to say I still prefer the steel ride. Funny you use the word livelier, as alive is how many (inc. myself) describe how steel rides compared to ali. It has a zip and zest about it. Ali is dull. Esp. important as you settle into a bike and get used to it over time. Ali just starts to feel dead in comparison to well designed steel frame. Ali is more clinical, but also more wearing on long rides and lacks character and a fun feel that flows with you. If you care about weight / speed, just lose a couple of pounds form the belly and you'll be healthier too! Also speed differences tend to be noticed when jumping from one bike to another, but over time you don't notice them. But you will always know you are on a quality steel bike.

Look, I know what you mean - I've had loads of nice steel frames over the years and there is a certain 'zing' to them.
They do tend to feel comfier on big day rides, and the spring and give of a nice steel frame can make them feel more involving.
However, the right grips, bars, tyres and seatpost can make an alloy bike almost as comfy as a steel one - and that weight difference isn't to be sniffed at.
I've always been a bit of a steel snob, but after riding Ms Spanner's bike quite a lot over the last few years things aren't as clear cut as I once thought.
I reckon design is more important than material, tbh.
Go single speed and forget about all that weight bs.
Get some fast rolling high volume tyres and forget it even more.
