Just picked up another steel frame and noted the manual says to spray in rust inhibitor once a year. I have previously used gt-85, WD40 and probably some wax-oil on one frame once. But I must confess this job often gets missed.

Is there any particular flavour inhibitor people recommend?

I sprayed waxoyl into my inbred frame when I got it (2nd hand) and well over 10 years later it was still completely fine. Haven't bothered doing anything to the p7 I got this year

BTR recommend Ambersil Tool Guard, never used it as my steel bikes have always lived indoors so dry out properly.

Never done it to any steel bike I've owned.

You could try Lanoguard though.

I used Dinitrol on my old car about 14 years ago. Sills haven't fallen off yet.

Rust doesn't seem to be much of a problem on my 26yr old steel frame tbh

I use this - comes with a useful lance so you can get into difficult places.

ACF50 is a doddle to use and pretty mess free.

I wouldn't bother. It's changing "standards" that make steel frames unusable, not rust.

This is sadly exactly what puts me off 'investing' in a frame for life (or for a long time at least). My current non-boost 27.5 frame is impossible to find a new suspension fork for and even wheel hubs were very limiting, and the bike is only 7 years old.

@airvent

Rsf suspension will put a straight (pr any other type) new steerer on forks. So just buy what you want and send to them. Think it used to be circa £140

Buy hope hubs, job jobbed.

Then buy a boost fork and run either the hope or a generic boost kit.

Thanks all. Seems like quite a few options, most of which are very expensive and or difficult to get hold of. A lot of the US made stuff isn't available making me wonder if it's got stuff that isn't legal over here.

I also found out that boeshield T9 is just mineral oil, petrol and a bit of paraffin wax. I've got plenty of all three so I might experiment in the garage!

I used Muc Off HCB1 when I built up my Marino a year or so ago, seems to still be in place when I did a strip down last week 👍
