Just washed my bike and noticed what i am sure is a crack on rear of my Whyte 19 steel, it seems to me to look like it potentially is a weaker part of the frame. Have a look.......

agree it's a crack - interesting it's where opposite where the end of the bolt on drop out will be exerting most force on the frame.

deffo!

unless the frame is only warranted for <15 Stone. 😉

it must be the enormous wattage you deliver these days...

looks liek the dropout has dug into the frame a bit too by the way the paint is around it?

Looks like alu to me, not striaght enough after welding, cold-setting too much for it.

wwaswas - what force?

Interestingly I nearly bought one of these a couple of years ago but then I noticed on Whyte's website that the max rider weight was 80-85kg or thereabouts. Last time I was 80kg people thought there was something wrong with me so i baled, despite the assurances of the bike shop and Whyte that the weight limit was wrong and would be corrected.

amything that tries to move the dropout in the frame in a direction other than fore/aft plus any flex in the bit the dropout bolts to will tend to concentrate force in the area where the bolt on dropout 'isn't'?

Mine did that and it was warrantied. I kept riding it for a good few months after the cracks appeared as I figured they were just in the paint, but when the paint started to flake I could see the cracks in the steel.

Update......

ATB agree from pics its a crack on friday.

Told me to send my whole bike in to them.

They sent a huge bike box via TNT to my workplace this morning. I packed it up and phoned them , within an hour another TNT man turned up to collect my bike this afternoon. So currently its winging its way to ATB. Awesome so far in my opinion.

ATB were great when my 2005 Whyte 19 developed cracks after 18 months use. I popped the frame into my LBS (where I bought it) and 48 hours later a replacement frame was waiting for me.

Hey Bb, things are good thanks. I even managed to take some time off from the house build to stradle an inbred in the woods last weekend 😀
Hope you get the frame sorted and come visit me in norfolkshire sometime soon.

Well ATB Sales were brilliant. Took delivery of my new 2012 framed Whyte 19 Steel all built up with my parts with new bottom bracket and gear cables/outers.

Brilliant service from first call on friday lunchtime to delivery just over a week later.

A great warranty experience from them , by rights they only had to swap the frame with me. Very happy Bigbloke 8)

To be fair: you really do deserve big service & big apologies from them. It's not as if you are the type of rider to wring every ounce of life out of a frame. That Steel "hardcore hardtail" takes less abuse & more looking after than my cars do.

*grumbles* bloody Whytes: look lovely, but very delicate */grumbles*
