Seems to be a lot of commuting banter at the moment. Maybe it's a sign of spring?
I'm contemplating a new job which will involve either a 1hr train ride and 6.6 mile commute, or a 20 minute train and 13 mile commute.
At the moment I ride 3 miles to a job which is driving me insane - a change is required.
Does anyone have any tips for arriving fresh and motivated? I'm fairly fit (or at least I will be soon) but don't do much road riding generally. What speed do you guys do on your commutes of similar distance? I estimated 1hr for 13miles, half hour for 6.5. Is that a bit conservative? There's not too many hills thankfully. The bike is fixied at the moment for ease of maintenance. Should I ease into this with some gears? I have the option of a 10 speed setup 🙂
Cheers
Depends entirely on traffic and traffic lights!
(and if you stop at them, which is another debate... I'll just say that traffic lights are awesome for practising trackstands and sprinting starts.)
Times sound right.
Even 13 miles is short enough to leave you invigorated or at least not tired
Sprinting starts are awesome.
Frequently used to win the tdf etc.
a lot depends on whether it's city/ suburbs or open roads
I have a short commute, but it's through London at rush-hour so doesn't really improve your fitness - but as dandelion says, it gives you amazing trackstand and handling skills
Just do it, you will love it and your general level of fitness will go through the roof
what i found after doing a 13mile commute for a few years is motivation can suffer at the weekends, such is life i guess. But now i am walking 5mins to work i am missing the riding.
12.5 miles. 40-45 mins on the road bike
OR
13.5 miles mix of on/off road. 55 mins, give or take.
Not done either yet this year but I feel it is time to get in about it again. I love it, though I'm shite at getting out of bed in the morning.
Cheers guys. I hadn't considered that I might actually enjoy it! It'll be almost entirely countryside - from either York or Malton, so both very small towns with not much traffic lights. The country lanes are quite nice, sometimes strewn with cowshit though.
My commute is about 12.5 miles each way, and feel fine when I get into work, and I can be on my feet for up to 12 hours at work. I think the real bonus is that on any road ride on a day off I don't even consider it started till I've gone at least 12.5 miles :-)Have fun mate
