A quick one for a Friday morning, I've fitted a new set of forks to my bike after I buggered up the stanchions on the other ones by getting a lump of rick stuck between the arch and the stanchion at a particularly muddy race.

It's been years since I last fitted a star nut into a steerer and it didn't go that well - slightly wonky -  as I don't have the correct fitting tool thing.

I do however have a load of the compression type bungs, given that all the assembly does - be it star nut or bung - is allow you to pre-load the headset bearings and then clamp in place with the stem, does it matter what method you use? The bearings loaded up nicely and there's no front end wobble.

I’m be never found a carbon bung that would fit a alloy steerer, but if you have it’ll work fine

No issues if it fits. It won't slip not will a properly installed (with the tool) star nut. Bodged star nuts can slip though.

It'll be fine, that's exactly what the Hope head doctor is for - only recently found out that they're only supposed to be used for alloy steerers (oops!)

Never seen that in my life! How "bodged" would it have to be?

I'll never use a star nut - My mechanical sympathy wont gouge the inside of the steerer like they do. Hope Head doctors on all of my bikes.
