I've seen a frame for sale, looks immaculate.  I have been drinking the long low and slack koolaid however and I wondering if the geo is a little dated and i'd be better off waiting for a new solaris max or something.  Tell me what to think.

I got one a few months back to replace a snapped El Mariachi.

If you want a versatile all rounder I'd say it's a good bet. It suits me in that it's capable enough for all the gnarl I'll ever want to ride but is still a good bike for woodland singletrack, forest tracks and bridleways. I have it set up rigid with a fork that's slightly too short, but if I swapped it to a 120mm fork and bigger tyres it'd be pretty capable. Tyre clearance and frame details are good.

It depends what you want really. If it's for hitting techy stuff and trail centres maybe there are better options. If you just want a good all round mtb then it's not dated at all.

I was thinking much the same 18 months ago, solaris max or sherpa, longer/slacker vs....well, less long and slack. Went for a 2nd hand sherpa, spent a bit on a decent fork and a good set of wheels, and built it up and now my full suss has been gathering dust fora year. Probably reflects me being more conservative in what I ride, but it copes with everything I used to ride on the Stumpjumper, maybe not as fast but its actually very stable and confidence inspiring on fairly steep and rocky trails. Doesn't exactly fly uphill, but that's either the build weight or my fitness. I haven't ridden the alternatives, so cant offer a definitive and objective opinion, but I love it.

Or a surly karate monkey?
I have a 2018 model, rides well. I’m not a geometry expert by any means though, so have no idea how it compares to the sherpa.

I've been riding mine recently on some long gravelly chalky trails. I'd forgotten just how good it is.

I had Sherpa that I liked but didn't love, I have replaced it since. To be fair I think the lacklustre Reba forks with moco damper hid the frames talents. It also depends what you want it for, it did make a great all rounder but wasn't as playful as the hype suggested.

What version is it?

Neither the mk1 or mk2 are very long and the clearance on the mk1 rear was not great.

I've had two over the years of the mk1 (a very early V1 and a V1.5) but I need longer than the std (non custom geometry) allows.

My first had a Reba with 115mm travel and a moco. The second had a 120mm Pike. The later made better use of the frame.

They are nicely finished and are great guys to deal with.

I had a mark 1 in green, I really miss it. It was epic in my local forest.

Still riding a mk1 - my go to bike as the full susser is overkill locally. Superb in the woods and can handle a bit of tech if required. Running mine with 100mm forks to keep the handling snappy.

Interested to hear what the changes are for the forthcoming mk 3. Expect it’ll be a little longer, head angle a little slacker and seat tube angle a little steeper.

I have a XL mk.1 I would change it for the rear clearance only, which I know was sorted on the mk.2

For 4 - 5 hour rides out in the Lakes and Dales its great.  Did my Mountain Bike Leader on mine, no stresses at all.  I use to it to teach MIAS on as its a comfy all day ride for delivering a course from.

I got a mk2 and find it really versatile... I think I prefer it with 27+ tyres and 120mm fork, but I also often ride it rigid with a 27+ rear and a 29+ front.

The only criticism I can foresee is that it’s a bit of an all rounder, and therefore could be compromised for those who might have a mucking about bike, a bike-packing bike and an XC bike

re. Gen 3.
The only parameters that have changed on this model are the seat tube and reach. The seat tube is now 75.5˚ and the reach is 441mm on the 17" frame.

I'm ten weeks and 1100 km into owning a steel Mk2 and it suits my riding well. Nothing too extreme, just pooching round the Dark Peak. Very pleased with it.

Cheers wheelie - the seat tube is significantly steeper then and 20mm or do more reach. Did expect an angle off the head angle, I must admit.

I’d imagine that with the longer wheelbase for a bit more stability it doesn’t need to be any slacker? I do wonder, as someone who needed a layback post when seat angles were 73 degs due to a hip issue, whether I’m going to have my Gen 2 Stanton for a very long time

Do it!

Mine is a year old (what gen is that?) and do most of my riding on it.

Stirling-type stuff so steep ups and down. Biggest ride on it has been Ben Cleuch / Andrew Gannel - with a 700m descent. Grintastic. Today will be the local woods with my son 🙂

I had one. Didn’t really like it that much. Sold it on here as a complete bike for too little and have now seen the same bike sold for a few hundred more. So if nothing else they hold their value!

A Gen 3 UK built Sherpa frame with one of their fancy paint jobs is £999!!
I got a Gen 1 in 2015, absolutely love it, I like the brand and their ethos but going through 3 variants in 5 yrs is pushing it a bit.

Just had a nosey at the new model.

I get that it's their XC bike and they have a more lairy 29er, but surely they've missed a trick with those seat tube lengths?

Saying that, £650 is lower than I expected for frame only and the standard colours are quite sexy anyway.

I have a 19” Stanton Sherpa that is a little too large for me.
I recently ordered a new Sherpa but due to Stantons stock issue they don’t have anymore gen 2 frames.
Stanton have offered me a generation 3 frame however that would be 4130 instead of my current 853 Reynolds.
Dan has assured me it will ride the same, does anyone have any experience with regard to the different steels ?

Thanks

I thought it was 853? Website implies this - although is this the difference between the UK and Taiwan versions?

From my phone call the cheaper frame is 4130 and the more expensive is 853.

I got a second hand mk2. It is great - stable and fun. I was hoping to still have an excuse to get something bigger 150-160mm, but don’t see the point now.

Only thing I can’t bring myself to do with it is to pull sons tag along.
