any fps worth checking out in the immediate vicinity?
looks like some gold might be had over the moor to the south, there's a summit and a quarry also.
any local knowledge, much obliged. will be coming from youlgreave and going over to darley dale via birchover but this can be altered to suit.

I think I have my answer.
Q? coming in from bottom left of the moor and just doing that top perimeter loop, CW or ACW to get the better descents?

I know its a ****ing horrible road climb, used to feature on the BHF challenge ride. The one where folks died of heart attacks on the ****ing horrible climbs.

There are worthwhile bits up there but its pretty crowded with walkers at the weekend so probably best saved for off peak mid week rides

ty for your concern, Wednesday morning!
politeness and even some friendly chat are usually had with passing walkersists & we always slow down and even stop and perhaps even pat their dog. *grin*

climb from birchover, in from bottom left and cw round that outer loop up to the stone circle and exit on the fp to the south that comes out at Birchover Quarry. ?! then we need to get to clough lane...

I've not ridden on Stanton Moor, but I know that its possible (as in people do, not that its "allowed"). The track from Birchover - Clough Lane is a good descent, and you can turn off (through a narrow squeeze-gap/stile onto a footpath/track through Clough wood that is fun too. Take a look on Strava heatmaps to see where people go.

Once down in Darley dale you can link up with the 5 dales loop https://outbiking.co.uk/5-dales-route-peak-district/ take the track beside the railway line to just before the curry house then up Northwood Road.

@morecashthandash the climb up to Stanton in Peak (@jekkyl note there is no "the") isn't that bad, and its certainly not even close to being the worst around. Try Rowsley bar or Riber for that or, for that matter, the climb up past the chapel in stanton Lees (the road is closed but passable).

HTH

I've ridden all of those, but not in the company of a bunch of middle aged middling fit chubsters trying to raise money for heart research - of which I was one 🤣

Yes it is the 5 dales we're doing but with other changes, namely cutting off that stupid big hill straight after Darley Dale which does not serve up any reward for the climb.

If you mean Northwood Road I quite like the traverse from there to the bends on Rowsley bar. I wouldn't skip it, but yes it is steep (On road on an MTB not that bad though).

Just to complete the thread. Stanton Moor was ace, not much elevation but a lovely place to explore. We spied a couple more lines down behind that dungeon tower thing so I think we will be making a repeat visit.

Did you follow the path to the old quarry building?

@jekkyl looks like a good ride. Its not bad for most of the year, the worst bit is after the climb from Carlton Lees when you turn left (the segment called "Big field" or "Up Hill o death") which can be boggy and unrideable. Another option is to turn right and descend to Chatsworth (Nice views) then through Edensor and eventually down past the golf-course and onto the Monsal trail at Bakewell.

The section past the golf-course has some good tracks (just follow your nose sort of stuff) but not so much fun when I'm on my hard-tail 😉
