Stanton headset bearing size?

Probably should mention which model, or MTB/gravel at the very least

The headset is on a sherpa so MTB.

The bearing itself? The headsets were crap. Throw the whole thing and fit a new headset or lower cup. Depends on the frame, but the Sherpa runs an external lower cup.

What's a good headset then, both external cups 1 1/8 to 1.5" a quick Google suggests there's not much choice apart from hope?

Presumably FSA or Cane Creek would have something available as they seem to be OEM headset choice these days....

If it's like the Slackline (and I think it is), then look for ZS44/28.6 Upper, EC44/40 Lower.

Depends what you want to spend. They have 44mm headtubes.

my Switch9er came with the Stanton headset. I find it to be decent quality and well sealed  they are about £50-£60

Hope 2 upper and type h lower would work. They are pretty well sealed.

I've got a Hope one for a 44mm tube gong spare if Simon above is correct and that's what you need.  Black, good nick, comes with a split crown race.

Thanks for all the info. Ideally I just wanted to spend a tenner on a newer set of bearings for my current Stanton headset, I just need confirming the size of the bearing.

I have measured it and not sure if it's 52mm or 51.9 out side diameter. I would guess 52 as that seems like a much more common size than the 51,9. 

I think it is 52mm od 40mm id and 7mm height. Can anyone confirm?

I would recommend you go to a bike shop and let them sort it out.

Email Stanton. I imagine they will be able to tell you the dimensions / have spares. <br /><br />

Or do the bearings not have any identifying marks on them? 

Have emailed Stanton and posted on the owners group on Facebook but there seems to be lots of people asking the question and nobody with any answers.

There is nothing as useful as a size stamped on the bearing, that would be too easy.

I never found out what size the bearings were I'm afraid. I did get a reply from Dan at Stanton and you can get replacement bearings from them for £35 a set. I ended up buying a new hope headset.

Yeah it's pretty annoying. I just took mine out to measure but the accuracy i got covers a number of options.

On a Ti Slackline the headset dimensions are:

Top: ZS44/28.6mm

Bottom: EC44/40mm

I fitted a Hope pick & mix headset.

But yes I am just thinking it might be easier to get a hope headset with well-known bearings than try and work out what's in the stanton one.

Yes the 44 refers to the size of the cup, the sherpa has a 44 mm head tube.

I went for hope for the same reasons as you state, the ability to get replacement bearings.

Measured stanton bearings again with calipers...I actually think they are the same size as the ones in....a hope headset! Slight question mark about the angles on the faces of the top bearing but the diameters are the same.

I've got some on order and I'll confirm if all good and the sizes I fitted explicitly.

Hi, moons ago I had a shop change out the upper headset bearing on my Stanton Slackine(and headset) as it was a compression fit, so required removal to replace the bearing.(didn't have the tools or the skills at the time myself)

Anyway, they replace the bearing (which was corroded due to water ingress) and I thought all was good until I noticed there was play in the headset no matter how much I tightened the pre- load.....took to another shop and it turns out it was the wrong bearing fitted.

My point of this ramble is I suspect that the angle on these Stanton headsets bearings is not the same as the common Hope ones although the same size.....which is what the shop chucked in the first instance, ...that and do your own maintenance because shops are rubbish.

Just following up ....the hope bearings fit but I ended up swapping out the lower cups with hope as buying a lower headset from hope was only marginally more expensive than a bearing on its own.

Have to say that not overly impressed with whatever bearings came in the stanton headset. A right state compared to the bearings in the hope bottom bracket that is the same age.

Much cheaper headset though, yes? Won’t be up to the same as a Hope (or similar priced headset by others).

Think it was like 50/60 quid added to the bike cost when I bought it.

Pound for pound the hope is miles better.

I think with stainless bearings the stanton headset would be fine.

Sorry I should also say I changed the top angled ring thing that goes in the upper bearing for a hope one. It was only a few quid, the stanton one was a state and wanted to remove the doubt about the angle. The upper cup is still the original stanton.

My Sherpa Ti Gen3 was shipped with lower bearing "type 2" size 40x52x7, 45x45

I also need to replace the bearings in a Stanton headset.  I contacted Stanton and they quoted £35, but then never replied to my response.

I also contacted Superstar.  They used to manufacture their headsets, but apparently not anymore.  They look very similar to the headsets on their site, and the bearing size that nikolai99 mentions matches the type2 bearing that they sell.

Sorry mate, didn't take a note of the upper bearing size when I had the fork out, it was only the lower one that felt crunchy...

Disappointing that Stanton aren't forthcoming with that info or easier to buy spares from

We don’t make Stanton’s headsets. They asked once and we made a load of samples but they went back to taiwan probably because they were slightly cheaper

The reason headset bearings rust out is they generally have bad sealing. I spent a fortune on several revisions of moulds to get our lip sealing right so we don’t appear to have any issues in the decade of selling them. We also have had bearings instock for the last decade too for quick and cheap refreshment

another issue is trapped water in frames. Once it’s in there it makes your frame a rustfest due to 100% humidity which keeps condensing on the cold steel till it rusts it

stainless bearings are stupid. They are too soft especially with the tiny ones on thin section bike stuff

if you can get the size then it’s almost certainly our type 1/2. Most common size out there.
