What is the cheap alternative?

I have some B&Q clear weatherproof stuff, £3 for a 2" wide roll, will that do? This is for road rims BTW.

Is it worth trying to save money?

or to put it another way, if your going down a hill at 50mph on those high pressure tyres, would you prefer to save 2 quid a wheel or would you prefer to know you had the proper stuff for the job.

If it's not already clear, I've not bought into the idea that the Stan's stuff is the only thing that will work, if you can demonstrate that no other product works, please do.

Otherwise, keep reading the brochures.

Does the bmx tube not work as rim tape? Never tried it sorry mate but the theory seems sound on a road wheel with a 24" tyre??

I'm sure there is a cheap 3M reinforced tape that is the same, however, cutting it to the right width may be a problem 😕

I used a few turns of electrical tape last time as I had run out of Stans tape . Seemed to seal the spoke holes fine. (Problem I had was with Nevegals taking ages to seal the bead) I cant say how long it would last as I went back to tubes.

Why not give it a go?. As long as you dont have a catastrophic burp, you should be able to save your sealant if it doesnt work?

What I will say about Stans tape is that I have done 4 wheels and never had a problem. (My Ardent non ust Went up dry and stayed up on Stans Rims) After adding sealant and airing up, they were never revisited. This is an endorsement not of just the tape, but the Stans rims, olympic valves and the Maxxis tyres. Adding 12 quid to a 200 quids worth of rims and tyres didnt seem to be an issue?

edit. Cant speak for road rims - I would let someone else do the research 🙂

I wouldn't trust electrical tape at 100psi. the point that stan's tape works has already been made, and does not answer my question.

Why not answer your own question then? Get down B and q and buy some tape. (or do you prefer it for everyone else to hurt themselves trying? )

I've wondered the same myself, even though I've always used Stans tape.

Stans tape is kinda more like a film; like the stuff that's used for 35mm negatives from Boots - the only thing I can think of to compare it to. It doesn't stretch much, unlike electrical tape. I wonder if the main property you'd be looking for is it being non-porous?

A roll of stans tape does 4 or 5 rims, so say 3 quid a wheel. It may not be the only stuff that works, but its time tested and has been shown not to have any problems, so for the cost I don't thing its worth risking cheaper options.
Losing all the air out of your tyre because the sealant has rotted the ghetto tape you used and the pressure blows it through a spoke hole while your descending a steep hill wouldn't be pretty. Just so you can claim your not fooled by advertising and saved yourself a couple of quid per wheel.

Fibreglass tape ?
http://www.trade1st.co.uk/productdetail/Mesh-and-Joint-Tape/252.aspx

That's the first one I found. If you search a bit harder you might find one the right width.
Good tensile strength, so it shouldn't deform in to the spoke holes.
Says it's for "sealing joints or gaps". I don't know if that means it's air tight.

I've been wondering about alternatives to Stan's tape myself.
I like Dancake's idea of you doing the experiments and letting us all know afterwards that you didn't die.

What's wrong with standard duck tape - it's strong enough to take the pressure so the only possible issue is the sealant. What sort of tubeless setup are you doing? Ghetto/rim strip? If so then there should be no sealant in contact with the tape so it'd be fine.

joking aside, its fun to play around with MTB setups and generally different things work. I guess generally you end up sticking a tube in when you have a muddy burp and try again.

but there are no lorries to run over you or 50mph gravel rash injuries on a mountain bike. I think it would be very brave to experiment in this manner on the road.

Good point, Dancake.
Best to experiment on a CX then. High pressures at low speeds with a soft landing.

thanks guys.

I've 2 sets of wheels to do, stans alphas and open pros (latter on cx).

I tried duct tape overlaid with the clear tape in my op on open pros before and it did deformed slightly into the holes after a few weeks.

Maybe I just meet to layer it up.

easy to check how it's doing and avoid catastrophic failures too...but that's clearly beyond the al-haterz 🙄

Al - duct tape does deform into the holes but so what? It doesn't actually fail - works fine on my road bike at 120psi. Two laters btw

Mind you that stuff reggie posted looks pretty spot on. Maybe a touch wide though.

I use mtb tubes for rim strips on my cross bike at 80psi and insulating tape on my mtb. No problems with either. I dont subscribe to stans being the only thing that works.

the 19mm is fine on

DT E540
DT 5.1
Mavic D521/321
Stans Flow

I had some slightly narrower stuff for the road wheels but I can't remember where I got that from.

Why would the thread be closed?

We've got the Chat forum and the Bike forum.

Perhaps we need another 2:

The Armchair Expert forum
The Those Who Have Actually Done It forum.

The Those Who Have Actually Done It forum

I like it. This would be good for road tubeless, to avoid those with an opinion on something they've not actually done.

Heh, that would reduce traffic by 95%!!!

I tried the £2.15 parcel tape from ebay, working fine and £££ saved, thanks!
