Anyone got experience running standard 2.4 HR2s on 29mm internal width rims, I'm wondering if it will give the tyre too square a profile? I'm running ProCore on 26" wheels so tyre choice is a bit more limited!

2.3 DHR2 and 2.3 Slaughter are both fine. As is a 2.3 Shorty.

I ran a 2.4 hr2 on a 30mm rim for a bit. Was square but not in a bad way. Rolled and cornered well on the back but not a fan of hr2's on the front.

I had that combo. Good on the front but draggy on the back, can't say I noticed them being overly square.
