Hey
I'm looking for some new/lighter rims for my wheels and found some Stans 355 rims at as really good price. I'm 14st and currently running Pro2's with DT 5.1 rims but I reckon they are overkill for my riding which is predominantly XC but with a bit of AM/trail centre stuff thrown in.
Anyone using the same combo? If so, what sort of riding?
Any advice gratefully received.
Cheers
Steve
I'm a bit lighter than you but have that combo on my SC Blur which is used almost exclusively at trail centres. I'm not into "big air" - if god had wanted us to fly he'd have given us aeroplanes - but they've never needed any adjustment from new.
Really rate 355 rims...Owned mine for a good couple of years and only picked up a couple of dings but they have stayed straight and true. Currently have them on my Hemlock. Same internally width as Mavic 719 rims but over 100g lighter.
Thanks for the reply guys 🙂
Depends a lot on speed, style and tyres. if you like to run really wide tyres tubeless at low pressure then a wider rim would make more sense.
Same as above. I'm a similar weight to you and have ridden 355/Pro2 wheels on my Soul at trail centres, in the Peak, Dales etc. for several years with no issues bar one minor ding. That said, I have just moved those wheels onto my Whippet for racing/less rocky stuff and put Flows on my Soul as that only tends to get used for trips away now, and as Onzadog says the wider rims work better with big tyres.
Mate swapped a set of DT 5.1s for 355s on his XC hardtail, has had zero problems, and he has taken the bike a fair few places where it shouldn't have gone - seen him hit 6' drops on it.
I have this combo on my epic and they've been fantastic - only issue I've ever had was when I came up short on a double and smacked the rear wheel - a spoke snapped but it stayed completely true.
Merlin were doing those rims cheap, not sure if they still are.
Currently running Maxxis Minion 2.35 on the front, Ardent 2.25 on the rear and would be looking to use similar as I find them really good for my riding. Would be fitted to an Intense 6.6 but most of my riding is just XC type on the Malverns (quite quick decents, no real drops etc) but will be used for the odd trial centre visit. I'd like to think I'm a smooth, fairly quick rider..
granny: those are the ones I'm looking at 🙂

Damn - the voucher code isn't valid against the rims.
Those look like another option George but the code doesn't work 🙁
