Evening Guys
Im trying to understand the required standards for bikes that are sold in the UK and Europe have to meet.
From speaking to frame and component manufactures they all appear to now build to the ISO 4210 standard, which I believe came in earlier this year. From I understand these aren't compulsory for manufactures to follow, but would be stupid if they didn't.
The things that I am unsure on.
What are the compulsory standards/requirements bikes need to meet to sell in the UK/Europe?
Are there ways not to sell bikes with reflectors, bells etc.
Are these still required for bikes designed for off road, stunt style riding, kids bikes. Are there ways to not have to do this.
What are the differences between the kids bikes standards and ones for MTB or stunt style bikes (BMX for example)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys 🙂
There's several overlapping things here - there's standards that bikes are built to, which are Europe-wide, then there are national laws about what can be used on the road, which covers things like reflectors etc.
Really, you'll just have to buy the standards if you're doing this professionally. A few hundred quid to make sure you're legal.
Does it cause you massive problems to just bung on reflectors and a bell? Customers can always take them off again.
A useful guide from the CTC. http://www.ctc.org.uk/cyclists-library/regulations/safety-regulations
Thanks guys for the replies. I am in the stages of getting some bikes designed and made. I'm just trying to get everything clear in my head first so not entering into it blind and ending up in a right royal mess lol.
Yes had checked out the ctc site. Still a little confused though :-0
There is no reason not to provide them either installed or in a bag. Just wondering if there are ways not to then I would like to look into them.
As for buying them, didn't realise that was what you had to do.. Best off making sure I know which ones I need then first 🙂
