Bought some new 4 pot Shimano Deores for my p7 last week - fit them yesterday and realised my shifter is ispecB and these brakes were ispecII, which aren't compatible. My bad, I should have checked.

Are these constant standards changes justified or is this just planned obsolescence?

Not the end of the world but it just seems wasteful, especially as there seemed to be no adaptor available.

It’s the best thing about standards, there are so many to chose from.

Haha. I don't think it would have annoyed me if I could buy an adaptor - I was forced to upgrade my shifter to an XT model - at least that's what I told the wife 😅

You can get adaptors from wolftooth components.

But yes super annoying.

🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭

We no longer have Standards in any meaningful sense for a lot of stuff we have "sizes" (that may not exist in five years time).

I know some of it is genuinely advancements but some of it really does feel like urine/cash extraction.

Olly2097 - could you show me a link for my own sanity? I looked for quite a long time and thought I'd found one, until I noticed it specifically excluded my slx shifter as the channel the mount fixes onto was slightly different 😕

Not that it really matters in the grand scheme of things, the shifter was only £40 and I'd bet any adaptor would be £20+.

I'm not that far off being able to build a spare bike up with a pile of obsolete bike parts on the plus side 😅

If standards weren’t evolving we’d be stuck on quick release, 1” steerers and quill stems.

That’s not to say that any of the ones we currently have are perfect - I’m looking at you 15mm front axles and what’s a boost front axle anyway!!?? - but in theory the better standards win out over time though that does get influenced by the company that introduced it and their market share.

The beauty of bikes a they’ve evolved is that components are MOSTLY interchangeable by design. It would be a massive pita if each manufacturer made their own components to their own standards and it would be pot luck if things worked across brands or even years.
The changing of standards could be better but it could be far worse.

Try SJS Cycles.
I had the same issue as you, @mudpackerdan so changed the top of the shifter (cover unit is the official name).

Looks like I was too hasty, cheers @dove1 I'll ask on here next time.

Although I am looking forward to cobbling together a bike made from odds and ends and obsolete standards.

Anyone got a frame they don't need 😅 must be 12 x 142mm through axle rear and boost front end to fit the spare wheels I have 🙈🙈🙈

I get that incremental improvements are what have brought us to the quality of mountain bikes we have now, it's just frustrating when a simple parts change turns into a treasure hunt.

(Quick note for younger readers: The fax machine scans paper to transmit messages using the telephone line. It’s like emails that are faster than mail, but sent by landline.)

Well, that's the strangest thread resurrection I've seen in a while.

Well that's a bit of a non sequitur. Pink gills are a sure sign of ageing.

Fax machines - stupid

Attaching your shifter to your brake, rather than the handlebar that is quite literally right there - stupid

There needs to be a cull, followed by naming and shaming of anyone that comes up with a new BB, headset or axle width, claiming dubious marginal gains.

Yet I have somehow managed to have a 68mm threaded BB in every one of my bikes in the last 50 years with exception of BMXes in the 80s.

I was hoping 30mm bb diameters were going to get us a 3 or even 5 speed planetary gearbox contained with the bb shell.

I am so far disappointed.

I spent some time in Tokyo a few years ago and for a country that has been at the forefront of technology, I was surprised how backward they were in many respects. Many shops and restaurants were cash only, I could find a cash machine and could pay on the tube easily with my card.

I also sometimes have to deal with the World Health Organisation and I have to communicate by fax, we keep a fax number going in our group specifically for the 3 or 4 times a year we have to communicate with them.

You know this shit has been going on since the dawn of time, right? I mean Raleigh were speccing bikes with their own proprietary BB since they started making bikes.

We have one in our GP practice for communicating with some hospital depts. who refuse to move on from the 1980s
