I am really hankering after a Lapierre zesty 514, I am 5'7" with fairly normal proportions, not particularly short in the leg etc. I wear 32" leg length kecks which are regular
However the small frame size has a standover of 780mm (nearly 31" !!) now bearing in mind that the recommended clearance is 2-3" minimum, this would make the average small frame size user need an inside leg of 34", how many 5'5" - 5'8" dudes have that sort of clearance, go figure ?
In fact how many 5'10" guys have a leg length like this. I believe the commencal meta 5 is similar too, which was my other choice. Or do shorter guys have to disregard the standover issue to get the bike that they want ?
i don't
but then my inside leg is 27.5" so standover is VERY important to me.
Even though the NHS has ensured I no longer can produce 'ickle tadpoles'

That's not normal that's tiny 😉
Only kidding as your leg measurement would suggest otherwise! I know what you mean about clearance though as even though I'm 6'3" with a 35" IL measurement most frames suited to my height seem mighty close to the crown jewels when I'm astride them 😮
its a big problem, i am 5ft 5 ans a bit and have 29inch inside leg, only FS I could currently buy with enoiugh top tube length and standover is the carbon yeti asl-c thing in small at 2.5k for the frame.
even went to buy one and they are out of stock
my hardtail was custom built to get a fit but its a headache and constantly on the lookout for summit to fit with 4 or 5inches travel.....might be waiting a long time!
I'm jut over 5'7" and ride a Medium Commencal Meta 5. I've always just disregarded this 2-3" standover clearance thing.
I too am 5'7 and have a small Motolite, 2" clearance no problems!
its a big problem
lol 😉
I am 5'8 with fairly short legs and it has never seemed a problem to - standover height on a medium Meta seemed fine to me. Didn't know about this 2-3" rule - is it a bit of a hangover from when top tubes were horizontal?
I thing so long as you can stand over your bike and yer nadgers aren't actually resting on teh top tube your fine.
Wear lycra - you get more clearance that way 😉
Published SO height figures can be a bit misleading - I just sold a 17in Kona Kula with a SO height of 773mm. I am 5'7" with relatively short legs (i.e. 29~30in) and there was a good 3-4in clearance when I stood over the frame! I had tried the 18in with a published SO of 785mm and there was still some clearance.
Could also be a Typo plenty of those on manufacturers websites.
Im 5.8 with a 31 leg - I just disregard standover - If you need to get of a mountain bike in a hurry chances are you put both feel in a pot holes or a bog or something or a deep rut - its just not worth worrying about a few inches here and there - if you crash and bend your legs you lose 6"- plus suspension, fork rebound etc.....
I ride a patriot, with big forks, depending on where I land I have -3 to +1 ( winter ) or 0 ( summer ) - provided I land on the flat, and my suspension is at full extension......
I'm 5'7 with a 29" inside no leg - no probs with my Marin Wolfridge Quad 140mm - latest version frame...soon to be for sale aswell 😉
I have a 18.5" Virtual 17.5" Actual Trek EX8 and my balls hit the down tube when standing over it. The next size down was the same. Don't worry about it too much. Just make sure the reach and riding possition is comfortable.
I couldn't stand astride my Yamaha YZ125 with both feet flat on the floor. Do you think that's why I was shit at riding it?
6'4" It's getting long enough jeans that I find the problem 🙂
welcome to my world, i ride a 15.5" Cove Handjob by the way which probably doesn't help you much 😆
Orange Five????
New DW Turner 5 spot?
Supposed to be quite small ( a friend who is a small on an old faux bar 5 spot but is buying a medium for his new one). They also do a 13" version.
5'7", 30" inside leg, small Meta 5 (with Lyriks), no problemo.
I might as well add, 5'11", 33" inside leg, Large Nicolai Helius CC with 130mm Revs, and me nadgers don't rest on the top tube 😆
i ride a 16" orange 5, the bike is great and I have ridden one for the past 4 years, however I can rest my sack on the top tube as I have a 29" inside leg. This really does not matter though and over the past 4 years I have never had a problem. The bike fits right when I am riding it and thats what matters I think. Do people have a problem with standover and in which way? Have I just been lucky?
whats the point of buying bike that fits you when your stationary and/or crashed?
90% of my crashes are the reult of me sliding out on a corner, so the bikes always leant right over anyway. Whilst it would be nice if there was a bike with no top tube and still stiff and light, in reality it cant be done.
Either that or take a BMX off road. You can lean them so far into an off camber corner the inside pedal/bars/axel nuts begin to have ground clearance issues!
i think its in the mind more than anything, and can affect confidence - although i guess because we are told standover is important - kinda think things are wrong if not there - have never injured my gonads riding - and i guess in any case, as my missus buggered off 2 years ago and i have 3 kids already - doesnt make too much difference!
I used this site for advice.
Edit, probably nsfw by the way.
I never realized there were so many small people, and all in one place on the internet too. 🙂
I do wonder how & why you even found that one! 😯
I do wonder how & why you even found that one!
I've been posting trophys there for ages...
5'8" here with I think a 29" inside leg. My medium SC BLT2 works fine, as did a Giant Reign 0 I tested. Do not have 2-3" clearance but then at my age it doesn't matter that much.
