I'm thinking about getting an XTR M9000 stages power meter, but I've been a bit put off by the issues people had with the early ones. Have they ironed out the bugs in the newer ones, or are they still a bit flakey?

I work in a shop that sells lots of the road ones even though we generally advice against it. Normally they give inconsistent readings and then stop working all together

Both my gen 1s are okay. Just don't expect anywhere near claimed battery life

I've had a gen 1 Ultegra work fine for ages, then fail suddenly. I also have a gen 2 XT M785 which didn't last long.

Both replaced under warranty and the replacements seem to be holding fine, for now. At least they are easy to replace and put the old crank arm on.

In my company, some of the guys have had to return quark, and rotor power meters with problems, but that is the whole crankset so a bit more difficult.

my mk2 has been fine. The first battery died after about 20 hours but the replacement appears to be lasting much longer

Hello,

Mine's been great. I have a Gen 2 and switch it between my road and mtb. The most important thing is, or so it seems, is to keep the unit indoors. I've raced mine in the wet and it's been no problems. Fingers crossed that it doesn't fail tomorrow on the chaingang now.

Matt

Repeating myself here as all the info is on another thread but had/got a few stages road & mtb. Had the well know issues with all Gen 1's. All were replaced with Gen 2's and had zero problems. As for the nonsense about inconsistent readings please ignore that as it's nonsense.

I have returned several due to customers complaining about inconsistent reading, yes the first gen had the bad battery covers but the 2nd gen still have problems but I'm glad to hear your unit is fine

Readings will be as inconsistant as your left/right leg balance.

If you're even it's fine, if you're not or change depending on how tired etc you are then it may be an issue.

I'm not balanced, do change and so for me Stages is fine for training on the turbo, pacing intervals and pacing long distance rides. I can't use it to compare against any Friel tables etc (I appear to have an Elite left leg and a Cat 4 right leg) and I've found pacing races is better done by perceived effort.

Next SL here I come!
