Everything off the hardtail seems to fit if I have my mech swinging going the right way. Quick Q, not done a hope headset before (came free with the frame), instructions says "use hope adaptors". My headset press is stepped and seems to be a good fit and I have the CK adaptors which fit a little better.
Anyone know what the hope adaptors look like?
just use a hummer and off cut of timber ya big fairy.
Great to see another ST4 in the wild. Was begning to think I'd bought niche bike for a while!
Look forward to build pics. Red looks nice!
I'll leave the hammer alone for a bit since that's a rather expensive frame and I'm not the most mechanically gifted 😉
I'll post some more pics later assuming things go well.
Right, well that wasn't without the odd challenge. Headset went in fine, but then it all went a bit wrong. NDS BB threads not cut deep enough. I couldn't get the external BB aligned properly and I don't have a thread cutter. Decided to swallow my pride and whipped it down to the bike shop who re-cut it, and asked me to chuck a tenner in the charity box. Revolution @ Ross top stuff esp Nick.
Then I just had one of those frustrating afternoons where Mechs proved troublesome and cable cutting was somewhat more iterative that I'd intended. The chainline is 50mm on a 73mmm bb shell and the cranks look awfully close to those fat stays. See how it goes but it might soon be 22/36/Bash 🙂
No idea about the shock yet, set sag to 25% and have CD manual to read later. There's all sorts of stuff going on there.
Quick ride up the road and stuff seems to mostly work. Proper ride tomorrow. All the bits are off my (silver) hardtail so it's not exactly colour matched but it's bought to ride, not to look at, so that'll have to do.

Right, better go see if my family has forgiven me for abandoning them all afternoon 😉
looks good (I do like red bikes)
I'm thinking of doing similar and was looking at either the orange or a superlight. where did you get your frame from?
forget the bike, what an ace garage/bike maintenance place!!!
Yeh, where's all the gardening crap that my wife fills the garage with?
Bike was from Sunset MTB as they were doing 0% finance and chucked in a free hope headset.
The workshop is bespoke 🙂 Built after we bought this house. Half of it is full of bikes (mine, kids, wife's) and bike stuff, other half if my office. There are 8 bikes on that back wall.
We have two additional sheds for Gardening crap. There was once a bizarre notion to leave the lawnmower in with the bikes, but that was never going to happen.
That's a really nice build mate. Why the 719's (over 717's for example) though? Is it just that you wanted to run more voluminous/wider tyres?
All the best.
Ta. On the rim front, I just wanted something I could take anywhere and not worry about dinking a rim. I've sort of gravited to mid weight parts like those rims over the years.
It's not that light really (esp compared to the hardtail I nicked the bits off) but I'm fairly confident nothing'll break in the middle of nowhere.
Frame came a bit early, and I'll probably get some wider bars and shorter stem to make it closer to the demo I rode (which I loved). See how it goes tomorrow.
Have never liked the look of orange bikes for some reason - stretches back to the time when I road one around the block at Sunset MTB about 15 years ago!
The ST4 has me really interested - saw surfr's bike and now this - looks stunning in red, hope you get a great ride in tomorrow 🙂
st4 is a very good bike, nice build too. Clearence is quite tight on the drive side though.
That's very nice, might have to demo one soon!
Lovely job mate. One of the best bikes I have owned! Whites Level on a ST4 is one of my favourite biking memories...
If anyone is interested, I am (reluctantly) selling my frame (white Orange ST4 9months old (uprated 2010 boxed chainsets), Hope headset, Hope ceramic bottom bracket, Fox RL 120 forks, xtr front mech.
A case of too many bikes, and it is too nice to sit there unridden.
Looking for £999 for the lot or £699 for frame only. Email in profile if you're interested.
Thanks,
Mark
ma-maracas have you got any pics of the bike please?
takamush@live.co.uk
tom
Nice workshop x 2.
Nice frame + build, will be interested to know how the forks workout at 120 + 130.
Hope the teathing rides have been good.
Got one ordered now, so there'll be another one out in W Wales Surfr 🙂
Mark mailed you re the forks.
pics please? and what size?
Here's a pic. Although if peeps could email me rather than post here please (don't want to jump on Alex' post - was going to do a formal post this week). It is an 18" btw (forgot that detail!)
And no jokes about the comedy height of the seatpost 😉 was just back from a bike fit on my road bike and was replicating the measurements 🙂
*Will throw in the Hope seatpost clamp, an Orange seatpost and Orange stem in the sale.
Notice you are an under-cranker, whereas Alex is an over-cranker...
It's a good spot that Mal-ec! Mine was laced under when I bought it, so always kept it that way.
I have issues with my profile email address at the moment so if peeps could use mark.warfield[at]gmail[dot]com instead please. thanks
yummy yummeeeee but i need a 16"
what have they done on it for 2010? anything or just paint? and anyone know frame weight? thanks
The chain stays were updated to box-section ones, rather than tubular (like the seat stays) (Alex and mine both have the box section ones), apparently people were using the bikes more aggressively than they were planned for, so they strengthened the chain stays accordingly. That's only change I am aware of from the 2009 model.
Short - frame weight is about 7lb (weighed with front mech, bb and headset in place). Thanks,
oooh. more ST4's 8) Loving mine after 8months or so now. Mine is 'older' round stay frame.
I *do* like that Red - my only regret with mine was I shoulda got red not white...
NP on highjack 🙂 I'd have probably had that off you if I'd known. Still news bikes always nice. I want to rebuild my HT with the Maxle Revs so I'm interested to know what you thought of the Fox's? The demo one I had was shod with those and I thought they were pretty good.
@Malc - you won't be disappointed. First ride on mine confirmed what I remembered from the demo. Going for wider bars and shorter stem tho (again like demo). Will try the forks a bit out (maybe 130) but would be happier with no faff fixed 120s I think. Definitely the sweet spot.
Matt - I think Orange recalled the round stays so check and get em replaced, supposed to be siffer and less chainsuck prone.
They didn't recall the old stay, they just redesigned it for the newer models - it was a running change. The newer stay just adds stiffness and strength with no real weight gain.
Nice bike Alex, looks like fun.
Hi,
If anyone is interested in buying an ST4 I have setup a post in the classifieds:
Thanks,
Mark
