I like the idea of these new hydraulic road brakes but I've been thinking. A number of people have had leaky shimano brake levers on mountain bikes. We all know seal kits don't exist but a new lever is reasonably prices so you just replace the sub assembly.

What's the score when a BR685 leaks? Is the master cylinder going to be available as a modular fit or is the only option a new £200 STI?

Any industry insiders know what the plan is?

Industry insiders are still waiting for them I hear. They've been delayed a bit, as they were due in stock at some places around now...CRC now shows 1/9/14.

You'd hope they'll either be bombproof or servicable, we'll soon find out!

Ha, much better thread, well done.

See my reply in your previous one though:

the exploded parts diagram isn't out yet, so still TBC, but it seems likely they'll do an assembly, they do anyway for the mechanical ones, but it's not cheap, and not sure what parts it'll actually include. When they did hydraulic MTB dual control levers they didn't do any additional seals. Do they really go that regularly? Never seen a problem myself.

Ie we've never seen modular master cylinders before, so I'd not expect them to start now.

That's the thing that concerns me about them. If there is an issue, is it going to be a warranty replacement of the whole unit? If so, what do you do while it's getting replaced?

The fact that nearly every new road disc brake, both mech and hydro, had a recall last year. Doesn't really fill me with confidence. Saying that, Shimano held off releasing anything last year in order to make sure they got this right the first time around.....unlike SRAM.

I like the idea of the RS685, but might go the HY/RD on my next bike until other people have done a bit of testing.

I don't doubt that for a second. I'm interested in what happens on the inside.
