You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I'm staying in St Albans (which is nice) for the forseeable, whilst working in North London (which isn't particularly nice). Thinking of taking the bike (mtb) down to build up some fitness and lose a bit of weight, as I've lost and gained both in equal measures lately.
I'll probably just pootle about a bit and guessing there isn't too much good stuff in the area, but if I did fancy a good bit of off road, is there anything to look for?
Has to be out of the door, as working long shifts, so not interested in driving to look for it.
TIA
Can't remember exactly where it is, but Paul from Rock and Road used to do a shop ride and knew the best bits of riding.
Lots of single track if you know where to look. Head out towards Wheathampstead and there are some nice trails over by symondshyde woods and the Ayots.
Dont know if they are still running but OTT used to do a Sunday morning ride from Harpenden.
Chicksands and woburn are not far from there, both are great.
Its better than you would think. Lots of bridleways, Boats and Rupps. Its disjointed and not exactly hilly but there is quite a lot of it hidden around.
As Jolly Green Giant says. Go to Sandridge and you have riflebutt/symondeshyde and then can head out to welwyn. Or go the other side around brookmans park and can get out to the woods that side. Used by Evans for their ride it thing.
As Jolly Green Giant says - Google OTT MTB. Been out with them a few times & you wont be disappointed.
A pity you won’t drive, Epping forest is 20mins down the road and is currently very dry proving miles of sunny Singletrack right now.
Pop into BC cycles Hatfield rd near Morrisons, Mike or Sam can supply info. Group rides from the jolly sailor Saturday leave at 8am or drop me an email
don't know if they still do shop rides but I used to ride with the guys from Addiktion cycles every week. Lots of good (flat) single-track. good for getting lots of flat miles in....and lots of nice village pubs nearby!
Cheers all, not brought the bike this week, but will check out some options next week. Too unfit for a shop/club ride, but some food for thought
If you look on a map there's a lot of bways leading NNEish towards Jolly green giants suggestions. V easy to draw a short loop around say, Codicote ,using those.
From the door I'd also suggest heading towards Wheathampstead/Harpenden/Welwyn, there are tracks etc. You can also pick up converted railway lines that are good for getting out - Hatfield, WGC, Hertford and onwards
Where are you in North London?
I work in St Albans, live in Hemel. Â My local riding is around Ashridge and Chilterns, which are probably a little too far to ride too, maybe 30min drive from centre of St A and also Woburn which is prob 45min drive.
There are some dirt jumps near the Marlbourugh club if you are into that thing? Â Don't know of any XC routes around St A, never tried looking.
Feel free to ping me a personal message if you want to meet up for a ride.
The builders cafe on Radlett high st is lovely, i d make sure a ride went past it, a few times.
