Anyone going? What's Comrie like? Will the midges eat me, what gear on a 29er?

Help!

Comrie is fantastic, quite a small area but they pack a lot in. The riding is pretty technical, lots of rock, it's a proper workout. A nice low gear for the climbs I reckon, you don't need to pedal much on the descents and I don't think there's a flat bit of trail at Comrie. If you need to ask about the midgies....

About three people race at ssuk

The rest do a half hearted lap then drink beers.

I'm toying with going.

I'll be there with the wife and kids, it's also her 40th so she can have the honor of "racing" 😂

From experience, how long/how much climbing is there likely to be in the race?

I'm one of the organisers of this, so I've got an interest. I've stayed at CC 4 times in mid summer and never noticed midgies once. There may be some but it's not bad like it is up here in Highland now.

There will be all sorts of people there. Most will start the race very enthusiastically and less will finish with the same enthusiasm. There will be great beer, food, music and it's a proper campsite with showers/facilities included in your entry. You'll have plenty time to explore the excellent trails and plenty time to socialise with people of like minds.

It's a social event, none of the three organisers are taking a penny out of it and any surplus is going to a very worthy cause.

Oh, and I'll be 32:20 😎

It's not a race, unless it is. If you're even remotely fit you'll be knocking on the top ten, even I made it out of the first few heats last year! Inevitably there's a few racing snakes at the front who'll win. I'd say they're missing the point but I was drinking with last year's winner the night before......

Friday night is a 2 hour ride at a leisurely pace to the pub and a wobble back.

Saturday is a 2-3 hour ride at an even more leisurely pace with beer stops. And an optional fast bit at the end where a small handfull of people take it seriously. '17 was about a an hour race, '18 was a CX style course on the beach and heats to decide the top ten then a final. Simon's plan said 3 hours of racing but that could mean anything.

Sunday is a well meaning idea of a ride that most people opt to have a bacon sandwich and lie down in dark sunglasses instead.

[crossed post] Swayndo, is it a 3h race, or is it a ride and a race?

100% race on the trails at Comrie Croft. Were you at Evanton for SSEC17? Like that... maybe not quite as tough but similar formula.

I'm in. Looking forward to it.

Toying with the idea of booking an extra night camping.

Planning to be on 32:20

17 was Staveley? and my introduction to this madness!

3 hours on the SS? I'm going to need to get training!

Last year I was on 32-14 with wagon wheels, great for the ride down from Reading and the blast down the beach, less great for the slog back in the soft sand into the wind! This year I'll be on something very low by the sounds of it!
