Recently changed from an 18t to a 16t sprocket at the back but this bought chain slippage when I was putting lots of pressure on the pedals.

I thought this was worn chain/front ring so I sorted those. Still slipped.

Maybe not enough chain wrap at the back with a push down so I converted my surly tensioner to a push up.

Now the chain is too slack so rubs on the chainstay when tensioned. Can't take a whole link out. Am I missing something really obvious that I can fix or should I just buy a half link and see if that works?

You are probably ready to move to a proper SS frame now.

A half link will solve your immediate problem 🙂
