SO, building up my 1st singlespeed tonight. Have got

Velosolo spacers,
Surly cog
KMC Z610HX 3/32 SS chain

I've put the cog and spacers on, shortened the chain and put it all together. (why is that stupid KMC master link that you can only use once?!)

So

How do i know i've got a good chainline? (it looks okay but who knows)
How do i know i've got the sliding dropouts lined up right? (again, it looks okay.. should i measure distance of the tensioner bolts?

chain tension - what's best?

1) chainline should be 'straight' ie. chain comes off the front chainring and the cog nice and even, its usually easy to see from just looking but look closely how it comes off the rings. Rule of thumb is have an equal number of spacers wither side of the cog and go from there.

2) sliding drop-outs should be equal distance from the frame, check to make sure the wheel itself is again sitting straight and not close to rubbing anywhere on the frame. When you are sure, do it up nice and tight.

3)Chain tension should be nice and tight but not so tight then when you back pedal (with your hand) you can feel resistance at points in the rotation. I forget the exact method but if you squeeze top and bottom sections of the chain together there should be half inch of movement>>>>>

1. Squint along the chain from the back - see no kinks? probably ok then.
2. Does the tyre look centred in the frame? probably ok then.

No need to get too anal about it if you have proper ss cogs because they are less likely to unship the chain if it's slightly out.

(But obviously getting it all perfect is best 🙂 )

Cheers people

Wheel doesn't seem to freewheel amazingly well but think that might be the bearings

Those KMC master links are weird. Says i have to get a masterlink tool to remove it?

beard has now gone 🙂

Will be taking it out for a test ride saturday. Hope everything doesn't fall apart.

Always wanted a titanium bike and now i've got one 🙂

I'd try and make sure the wheel is as close to perfect as you can get it, otherwise you're probably going to get the back brake squealing and generally kicking up a fuss. If the back-pedalling is notchy, that's the bearings you can feel, you can feel whether the bearings are aligned with a bearing or a gap inline with the chain. Too much tension and your bearings won't last long.

I can't believe it's taken you this long to build it up, what are you playing at?

A chunky chain.......NOOOOOO get a grip man and slap your inner weight weenie until it wakes up, silly light single speeds are the one true way my son, do not be distracted by these nichewhores with their weighty beards and gas pipe love affairs A heavy chain is the first step into darkness, you'll be sticking bits of bloomin beer bottle cap on it next!.

(for some reason rise on the bars look huge in the photo but they're not)

First outing today in the quantocks. Running a 32:16. Think i needed a wider bar for the climbs but just about managed to get up everything. Felt great on the descents, first time i'd ridden a titanium hardtail before and I know what people mean about the feeling (everything was a straight swap from a scandium sobo)

Kept checking it on the ride and everyone else kept saying "it's okay.. leave it alone.. it's not skipping or falling off"
