You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
reverse components SS kit arriving tomo with a shiny new kmc chain.
any tips on installing or is it as straight forward as it sounds?
got 32/13 and /16 for those interested.
cheers
oooh niche! Pics?
Yeah this needs more details.
will add pics once its done
Yes, we really need more details about the bike's current setup! I assume you are starting with a single ring upfront and with a thru-axle.
I singlespeed my MTB most winters and really like it, although a lot of fettling can be required to ensure the chain doesn't skip. If you have fixed dropouts, then you will likely need a chain tensioner (Surly Singleator, On One Doofer etc) - you may have to experiment with whether it works best pushing the chain down or up. I've found that chainline is really important, with small adjustments making a lot of difference.
Chances are he'll need a tensioner of some description on a FS to allow for chain growth.
its a single pivot starling twist, this is the chain tensioner ive gone for, pretty much the same price as a new derailleur so thought a bit of ss was worth ago.
pretty sure the spacer set has an assortment of spacers down to 3mm so hoping to get the chain line dialed so its bombproof (as can be)
I ran a Yess tensioner on an old Foes for a while. Very straightforward, easier than messing with sliding dropouts, EBBs etc.
Darn! Hoped it was more of this...
Yeah, niche, but not unheard of. Friends had their full sussers singlespeeded for SSEC in Scotland few years back.
Codeine and Canfield Riot. They didn't even bother with dedicated chain tensioners, just used their rear mechs with limit screws cranked all in.
Was working fine, they finished the course.
Cheers!
I.
You need to do it properly and not rely on a tensioner
(although the geometry, brakes, suspension and wheel size may be a problem!)

I used to have one of those, sold it to Dave A. Was a lot of fun, but bobbed like a, err, bobby thing.
So Dave A rode a Kona A
I had two* 'A's, a MK1 with rim brakes, and a MK2 with discs. With a platform shock (RP23 at the time) on the back and set up nice and firm it was actually a brilliant XC/singletrack muncher especially on bumpier climbs as you you could ride it 'like a SS' but crucially you could keep gurning when it got bumpy where a hardtail would start skipping and losing traction. It was also better at carrying speed on the coasting bits when you couldn't pedal so it was a great antidote to the two main drawbacks of SS.
Really miss them to be honest, first one was stolen, second one eventually snapped 🙁
* One of which I think** I bought from Dave A!
** Yup, emails checked, it was Dave A's old one, so was originally yours john_l?
I had the 4x/DJ version as a SS FS for a while. Good fun but very bobby. I wonder how the more modern Lone Parabellum would fair SS. It's got the main pivot in the right place.
I'm a big fan of Singlespeeds but both my SS full suspension experiments were a bit meh.
First I had a Commencal Absolute XS with its pivot around the BB but I still needed a tensioner as there wasn't enough adjustment on the dropouts for the chainring & chain length I was using.
I figured if I was running a tensioner anyway then I might as well use a frame with less bob and one that vaguely fit me so I used a Giant Trance which had very little chain growth anyway.
I ended up going back to gears as the simplicity of SS was lost and I still struggled to keep up with people down hill plus the riding style of sprint, spin, coast just didn't suit the soft back end. I would totally have another SS hardtail though.
BB pivot frames benefit loads from an oval chainring and a very smooth circular pedalling style, it helps reduce the bob a lot.
I also had an "A".
Bobbed like a bastard.
Did the Builth Wells Kona 100 on it.
Worst bike choice ever for a 100KM event.
Thought I'd never make it back to the finish.

I've had a SSFS for a while. Its a bit special
Nearly sold it a couple of years ago, but glad I hung onto it. Great fun summer bike.
I have a Rohloff on one of the other bikes to and have looked into all options for tensioning over the years. Track-ends, sliding dropouts, EBBs etc. Problem is they don't deal with chain-stretch or chain-ring eccentricity (or varying length on a full;-sus bike). I've come to the conclusion that since the chain or belt is designed to flex, then use that to take up the slack, literally and use a sprung tensioner. Running a mech-hanger mounted tensioner at the monent, but would like a YESS ETR-B if they still existed. For a full sus frame, I'd be looking at the designs used by Zerode and Nicolai with their Pinion bikes.
Yup, emails checked, it was Dave A’s old one, so was originally yours john_l?
Actually, it was originally Jenn's. On loan from Paligap I think. Then I bought it.
Newb.... How do I upload an image from a phone?
