I have a Charge Duster 8 with Alfine hub and I want to get another wheel with SS hub so I can switch between SS and geared for different rides.
Sounds simple, but where can I buy (cheaply) a complete wheel (hub, freewheel, spokes, rim and anything else I might need)?
I can't seem to see any complete packages anywhere, and I'm worried about buying the different components separately in case they don't fit together properly, as my mechanical skills are limited. And my LBS aren't being much help.
on one?
On One is where I started but I can't see anything
For maximum compatibility and in case you want gears I'd buy a normal rear wheel and a conversion kit. On-One do one, but I'd buy sproeckets seperately as most kits come with cheep thin ones, and thicker ones like on-one groove armada sprockets won't damage alluminium freehubs.
If you have no tool's then you'll also need a cassette lockring tool (and an adjustable spanner or 1/2" driver to turn it) and a chain whip.

(remove the extra washer to run wide sprockets)
Wide sprocket

(start at a 2:1 ratio to your chainring eg 32-16 or 36-18, but everyone rides somwehre different and is fitter/less fit)
And any rear wheel you like.
No, don't use a standard wheel, it's a nasty compromise, having a massive thing sticking out the side for a cassette but just having a single cog on it. Just keep looking for a pair of the right wheels on Ebay or bike forums. You'll find a set.
I bought a nice pair of new wheels - Bontrager rims on cheap hubs with disc fitting and single speed cog - 700c. I paid about £95 new from Ebay. They do come up, just be patient.
Here's what I built:

Is that a Bad Boy Ultra, used to lust after one of those frames....
Superstar do custom wheels with a single speed hub, works out around £92 depending on spec. I had a wheel built onto one of these hubs and its been good, but as mentioned above by thisisnotaspoon i'd go for a normal cassette wheel with a converion kit. My superstar hub is now stripped if you want it for building a rim onto 😉
Yeah, 2004 Bad Boy Ultra. I rescued it from a garden and built it up. Anyway, good luck with your search...
