i have a ss road bike with a 135spaced rear hub and 116 square taper bb. I find the cranks very wide compared to road bike. I was going to try a 110 bb and space out the chainring by 1 or 2mm, i'm assuming 1 or 2 mm wont affect chainline that much.

will i get away with a 108 or 107bb axle or is 3 or 4mm pushing it?

You'll need to check the clearance of the crank arms on the chainstays so they don't foul. This is the main reason mtb cranks have a greater Q factor than road bikes.

If thats ok, can you move the chainring to the outer position to keep the chainline similar?

As specific chain set but there is space to put a 2mm spacer between ring and spider
