[Closed] SS chainline - better to have the cog closer to the spokes?

i have a 9spd shimano freehub, using a conversion spacer kit.
front chainline is 51mm, from memory (68mm shell, truvativ GXP triple with chainring mounted on the back of the middle ring tabs).

this puts the rear cog at the far end of the freehub (ie closer to the locknut)

question is, will this be more likely to bork the freehub than if the cog was closer to the spokes? thinking leverage and that... most SS conversions i've seen have the cog in the middle of the freehub, more or less.

i ask because the first ride after converting it killed the freehub! maybe it was on its way out anyway.

I just go for as straight a chain as possible to avoid throwing it. This usually means it's at the frame end of the freehub.

In theory I agree it should be in the middle ideally but mine is close to the end and worked OK for years.

ok, ta 🙂

chainline is straight, just wanted to know if i was asking for trouble with the cog on the end - i'm used to track hubs, so it kinda looks weird there. i can play around with the bb cups to get the front chainline down a bit, there's plenty of clearance between the chainstays and the cranks & ring.

This was the result of using a cog too far out on too light a freehub...

I've got one quite inboard and on my disc mounted fixie its right out on the outside, seems to make no difference. So far anyway touch wood 😉

That looks like a Tune freehub. What's it from? I've broken two on my Prince in less than a year (race bike, so only ridden 11 times, although one of those was a 24hr).
Did you get yours from Leisure Lakes by any chance? If so you may be the 'only other' person Posh Bikes mentioned to me. Or is this more common than they are letting on?

Anyway, back to the OP, I do what Brassneck does and just go for a straight chainline, in my case 3/4 of the way to the frame end.

I run mine pretty much on the outside to match the fact I run the front on the outside of the crank cos it looks better 🙂 That freehub body looks super light... clearly too light!

doesn't look like mine (mag 180). i had concerns about the tune spline pattern with a campag cassette, the fit seemed sloppy, but tune said it was fine. it's (touch wood) outlasted two rims so i guess so.

Yes, it is (was...) a Tune King (or Kong, can never remember which is which) that came from Poshbikes direct. They wouldn't warranty it... On a steel freehub body I wouldn't be too concerned about where the cog goes.

I got mine from Leisure Lakes. I've gone through 5! freehub bodies in 4 years at £130+ a time. I'm never ever ever ever ever ever...... having anything to do with Tune bits again. Every time I had it sent off it took around 6 weeks at the earliest to come back. I've even had 3 different style Tune freehub bodies as well, all with promises of improvements. I'm by no means a heavy rider or abuser. I even snapped completely the 6 disc tabs all together off the hub body itself! This red freehub body above I broke 2 of! Always sent to poshbikes for service and always refitted the cst at 40n/m as per Shimano and Tunes instructions by Poshbikes. Poshbikes have always been very helpful and understanding but that doesn't change the fact of myself not having an £800 wheel set and a £5k bike I cant ride! I gave up on Tune in the end and have gone to DT 240's.
