[Closed] SRAM XO 10spd chain length issue?

Hi folks,
I've just bought a bike second hand that's running SRAM XO and when the chain is on both small sprockets it seems a little slack. I think the length is ok as I tested it on both large sprockets and the rear mech appeared to be at full stretch.
Gear shift is fine but the chain occasionally slips when on both small sprockets.
Is there a adjustment to take up the slack or could I be looking 2 problems here???
Just to add, the bike has had little use in its life and there is little wear on the drivetrain components.
Hope someone can help.
Thanks

Really you shouldn't be using the smallest ring with the smallest sprocket, or large/large. For the reasons you state. You'll find the same ratios elsewhere with different combos. Are you using a long cage mech?

Mechanical sympathy. Learn it.

Convert to 1 x 10 - Neater, simpler, lighter & it's in fashion 😉

Job done.

Unless you live near proper hills

Never use the 2 smallest together, if it's 3x10 don't use the 2 largest.

I don't as a rule use small/small or large/large and used it only to check chain length. Either way the chain appears too slack when on small ring and sprocket.
I think it's a long cage mech as it has 3x10 stamped on it.
I live in the Cotswold so not convinced 1 x10 will suit.

On big big I tend to go with mech at full extension then back off a bit (to allow for fixing broken chains etc) the mech then has to deal with the other eventualities.

And this is exactly why you shouldn't use small/small (you shouldn't even need to check the chain length in that position). Simples.

So a chain flailing around and hitting the underside of the frame when in small/small is fine?
And as mentioned before I'm getting chain slip when on the two smallest sprockets.
Surely this points to chain tension?

Yep. That's why we have chainstay protectors. Chain slip could be worn sprockets.

Cassette has had very little use and is virtually brand new.

Yes and, as everyone has pointed out, and you yourself have acknowledged, don't use small/small! The slipping, if not primarily caused by you using the wrong gears, could be down to different amounts of wear in the chain and cassette, which, assuming you're correct about the cassette not being very worn, should sort itself out in no time.

Thanks sunnrider, that's what I was starting to think. Trouble is if I remove 1 link the chain will be too short as per SRAM's instructions for determining chain length i.e thread chain around large chainring and large sprocket and add 2 links.

One other question. Isthere meant to be a spring built in to the bolt that attaches the rear derailleur to the hanger?
Just checked my old xt derailleur and that has a built in spring
Thanks

Don't use small/small then.

To really check the chain, take it off and then put it large/large but not through the mechs. Add one link and it'll be right.

It sounds like you think the chain is too long albeit that it fits when you follow the SRAM manual

If you think it's too short then take a link out and try it on the big/big combination

If its fine there then great. If its too short then put the link back in and don't use small small

Don't forget to check what it's like when your suspension (if any) is compressed

I know the method says not to check with it through the mech but thats how its used. How much spare do you have when large to large mech included. Drop the shock out to check for growth then thats your answer. Shorten as much as you can.
