I'm in the process of getting parts together for a new build for my daughters MTB. I've got a barely used X9 type 2 10 speed rear mech I'd like to use but I've no shifter. Is an XO 10 speed shifter compatible? Also has anyone had any luck using an X9 with a larger cassette such as a 42t or a 46t? Thanks! 🙂

I can't give you a definitive answer to the shifter question but I imagine it would be fine, as far as i remember all the Sram shifters/mechs of that era used the same cable pull ratio.

With regards to te bigger cassette, I just recently set my mtb up with a 1X9 set up using an X9 9 speed mech and a 11-42 cassette, it needed one of those derailleur hanger extender/goat link things, I got one from Aliexpress but they are available on ebay as well, and it works fine, pretty sure it would accommodate 46t as well.

Yes a 10 speed X9 mech will work with a 10 speed X0 shifter as they're both 10 speed. It's the equivalent of a XT mech with an XTR shifter
