Shifts perfectly when clean but as soon as it gets claggy and I go into lowest gear, it sticks and won't shift up

Running on a 3x9 triple but only using the middle ring

New cables / outers all over so its not that. No issues with mech hanger - only happens when it's gritty like there's not enough power in the spring to pull it back. Any ideas?

Oooh oooh I know this one! There's not enough power in the spring to pull it back.

No, really: SRAM sold a dodgy batch of X9 mechs with feeble springs (or tight pivots) a couple of years ago. I had one, and the only fix I could come up with in the end was fitting a new mech. Sorry...

He's right, I lost count of the number we had to send back under warranty.

Yep, just as @mintimperial says: crap springs! Apparently mainly on the OEM stuff. I had a new X9 under warranty… problem solved. Keep your jockey wheels… you'll need them later.

Same problem here with the weak spring. Mine and a lot of others from reading on the web also are not helped by lateral play developing on the main pivot bolt. This play means that the mech could swing side to side enough to leave the jockey wheels in the same place after 2 or 3 up or down shifts. I changed back to Shimano in the end. the Sram stuff is rubbish. I had 12 year old shimano lx that worked better than the x9 stuff did after 6 months in the same conditions on the same bike.

I've gone through a few X9 shifters in the last year, and one X0 derailer (to be fair though though it did cop a rock fairly hard). THe X9 shifters seem to be a real pain, I know a few peopple that have had trouble with them. Strangely enough the ones on my old bike (2008) never missed a beat.

I've been using sram x9 mechs for a while and seem work ok me despite the abuse of being thrown in the car / knocked etc and the thing wobbles a bit too !! I must be lucky as my shifters are fine too 🙂
