SLX is proven and you can get that for £95ish, Ive always found Shimano's lower end parts are better that SRAM's equivelents, but I prefer SRAM's X9+ stuff to Shimano's, XT etc.

what sam said and I am a SRAM fanboy- would not get anything below X9 personally and even there i would imagine XT/SLX is better value for money and not GXP

no real help here but i've always had SRAM stuff and have x7 on my stiffee still actually with truvativ stylo 2.2AM chainset(and hope BB in place of the crappy GXP one), but once i build my new bike next year i'm switching to XT/SLX for the way better VFM.

Dunno what kind of budget you can stretch to but Rose have the new XT chainset for £103 + postage Seems like better VFM to me but it all depends on how deep your pockets are?

Also worth a look are second hand Race Face Atlas cranks. I absolutely love mine, so much so i now have a set on both my bikes. The last ones i bought second hand were about £80-90 with chain rings in a very good condition.

You get a shock yet?

I've got X7 front mech, rear mech & shifters and they've been good for me. Keep on working despite (many) knocks & scrapes.

Am running deore cranks though - not GXP.

You need a very good reason to buy a crank that isn't Shimano, IMO. And an even better reason to buy a GXP- an awesome combination of poor BB life, and poor compatability.

my mate bought one and some seal kept working loose making it seize up. or something like that. he used it for 3 months and binned it. and he doesn't have a reputation for being wasteful with his cash if you know what I mean.

Is this for your SX trail build? What about this deal on SLX with the bash included: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=28019

Only £90. At this price I am thinking of buying one as a spare

Those LX up there are a touring chainset with big rings 48-36-24 type thing, SLX all the way IMO

My last GXP BB has lasted me really well (I'm as surprised as anyone). Packed loads of teflon grease everywhere before installing it which may or may not have made a difference. Probably still go Shimano next time I need a chainset though 😀

Mark, if you want an X7 chainset I've got one you can have, probably got a rear mech and shifter to go with it if you want them.

X7 has a narrower Q-factor.
Important for some people.

Good spot about the teeth, avoid the LX...I had got some from J E James wit 44/32/22 which worked and assumed these were the same

GXB bottom brackets are absolutely gash. Even with the new gutter seal, they don't last long. I ran SRAM cranks for a while and although they're good, the opposition does it far better at a similar price point.

SLX every time, it's smoother, stiffer, has better bearings and the finish doesn't wear off as easily. Oh and for £103 I'd absolutely go for XT.

You can buy an insert for hope bb's that goes in NDS and allows use of gxp cranks.

Not sure about the longevity of it compared to a hope bb being used in the normal shimano/fsa/etc sense of "preload bolt squeezes both bearings inwrds together": the difference is still that the cranks clamp only on nds bearing - the crank spindle floats on the drive side bearing.

If it was my money, having had gxp crankset before and got on just "ok" with it, I would still get a shimano/similar crank.
