I have been told this arvo that there is a "common" fault with these shifters. i caved in and took the epic in to the lbs for a quick once over and to get the brakes sorted as I am lacking in tools currently - to find it needs new cassette, chainrings, chain and there is a fault with the shifter sticking allthough i've never noticed this before. got bike home and now i can't get the big ring - the mech won't budge off the middle ring!!!
any ideas ace mechanic mens??
on the plus side the brakes are all sorted now 😐
Have the same problem with X5 shifters / X9 front derailleur ...
If it came like that from the LBS you should take it back I think.
hmmmm sounds about right for bike shops...you take it back to enquire bout something and they always tell you that ya need new gear (costing you a fortune AGIN.. i had sram x-7 shifters that i fit to my hard tail...never really had a problem with them, ...
it's going back in the morning for sure but wondered how many ppl have had problems [with the shifters]....
thx - m
Not had a problem with the shifters but the pivots on the rear mechs have been known to get sticky. My mech is just back from merlin after getting repaired.
Yeah, I've had a few problems with the shifters. Normally not shifting down properly. Open them up and normally the spring's slipped out of it's location. Sometimes they just need a clean and a wee grease. It's not too bad inside there once you've opened it and I certainly never had an issue putting it back together.
Are you sure it's the shifter though? I only ask because normally it's a problem with it not dropping down a gear but I've never had a problem with it shifting up.
eye take it back, if there any good that should be a doddle. those mechs can stick.
i hadn't had a problem with it but the guy at the shop was adamant that there was something wrong with the shifter for the front mech going from middle to outer rings. i asked him to lube and refit as i didn't fancy shelling out until it failed. to be fair they wanted to poursue a warranty claim but that would have meant leaving it there over the weekend and the cannondale isn't up to much at the moment...
is it coincedence that it failed as soon as i got the bike back home?
thats wiered matt...my son took his bike to the shop (for something else) but when he got home none of the shifters worked properly....not going into gear correctlyand wouldnt go into middle ring without the the chain slipping.... he has X9 shifters on his cannondale.. wonder what the common problembo actually is ?
i use sram x-9 shifters they can get tuff sometimes, i get problems going into middle ring, and the shifter its self is really stiff to press down, they just need playing with, once u get it right there not to bad
had problems with it not going in to high gears on the back whilst half-way round the Marin Trail. Very annoying! Anyway i eventually pulled over and flipped the bike upside down, it seemed that the mech was stuck. my mate was adamant it was the mech but i disagreed as the mechs get plenty tlc. when i got it back home i cleaned, degreased and re-greased the mech but it happened again about a fortnight later. I then took appart the shifter and re-positioned the spring, etc then put it back to together. Well i've had not bother since so my verdict is the shifter is at fault in these instances. I prefer the feel of SRAM when they work but i have never had any trouble like this with any Shimano gear in the past and i've used the loads longer....You may find this link useful if it happens again - http://www.sicklines.com/tech/howto/sram-rebuild/x9-shifter-
ok - back from the shop. they took the epic in to the dark back room where all the "magic" happens and 5 mins later cam back out with it all working. apparently the cable had slipped!!!
this experience has told me never to buy anything that i can't fix and will think twice before returning for their special type of attention.
